I'm just looking for a little advice... I provide architectural as-built plans for a great commercial client of mine. On average, I'll do about 100-150 projects per year with them. I recently started adding Matterport tours and everyone enjoys that extra virtual walk-thru of the property. I've added that feature to all of my clients and provide complimentary hosting for 90 days. Nobody seems to care about having the tours for longer than 90 days so it all works out. Except...now this large client would like to have the tours accessible "indefinitely". They don't want to get into a subscription issue - they just want a one time fee. AND...I don't want to upset the apple cart and keep them happy. Questions: Are there other platforms I could move a Matterport model too? (I'm assuming not.) I ran some quick numbers. If I charged an extra ~$100 per project, theoretically I'd probably make enough each year to cover an Enterprise plan, right? (...assuming an Enterprise plan is roughly $1000/mo.) I'm just trying to figure out what to do with a client that wants access to their tours "indefinitely". Has anyone ran into this and/or have any advice? |

Personally, I'd let them get their own account then transfer their tours over to them that way they can determine how long or how many tours they would like to keep.

I thought about that…but I’m almost guaranteed they don’t want to manage that. Not like it’s difficult to manage, but in essence, that’s basically what I’d be doing - charging a little more per project and maintaining an Enterprise account purely for them.

@rhelling Since you can publish Matterport tours to Google Street View. And, Google Street View does not charge for hosting, is that an option for you? Dan |

That's a really interesting thought Dan. I'll run some test examples and might approach the client with that...

Indefinite sounds expensive, and $100 sounds next to free. I charge $250 per year renewal for a single MP model for hosting commercial - that's a deal. Most services always raise prices, as the cost of everything, including energy is not coming down anytime soon. Dan's idea is gold. You can also download the scans as 360's, compile in one of dozens of platforms. Momento360 has a free plan, so maybe you can migrate to there, and if needed created an account for each when you reach max capacity for free account. There's no rule you can't have dozens. |

@getmyvr I agree - "indefinite" does sound expensive. I'm gonna ballpark my typical fee for the size of projects they have around $600. Adding $250 would likely be a stretch. Again, not trying to upset a very good client. (Do you really get commercial clients to pay the $250?) ...at that rate I'd be making an extra $37,500/year! lol I love Dan's idea. I'm going to look into that more... (...not sure if the client wants there stuff out there publicly, but it's definitely an option.) I wasn't aware of the 360 download. Other than I download the Matterport file in a zip and give it to my clients. That part of the deal is kinda over my head but it might be something I look into more. If I could import those 360's into another account (with relative ease) that could be a solution. (...with relative ease - that will be important. I can't spend hours on each of these projects.) Thanks for all the advice! |

@rhelling call your gas, electric or any service company and tell them you want to lock into the price forever. I only have a few clients that do this but the one that I charge $250 a year, He's a builder, and my 3D model is on his website to promote their quality and their houses start at $2 million and he's booked up for 2 years worth of work. You provide a very specialized, highly technical service, my friend. |

@rhelling Please think about all the things that could go wrong with offering 1x fee for lifetime hosting. For example, what happens if Matterport starts charging for hosting (rather than just x models live). In 2019, Matterport switched from Matterport Classic Pricing to "new" Matterport pricing and disruptive the business models of many Matterport Service Providers. What happens if/when you want to sell your business or retire? What if the Matterport tech changes and if old models are no longer supported? Best, Dan |

With some of my recent conversations with the Matterport team they still seem to struggle with the concept of the "WHY" some folks may want to hold on to tours for the long term and why the putting a tour into deep storage "inactive" doesn't work for clients like builders for instance that want to access home tours for potential clients or to reference for other builds.

The more photographers - and clients - keep tours active, the more promotion for using Matterport tours. I could imagine many photographers would like ALL tours to be active to show that they have done hundreds or thousands of tours (and, thus, have a ton of experience ... as another reason to engage a pro.) @DanSmigrod My last call with Matterport I had even suggested that maybe that after a certain time frame that tours then became locked i.e. can no longer be edited and in order to edit a tour (add mattertags, etc) that the tour would need to be re-processed. |

This is particularly important for service providers that offer Matterport tours. That would have been a great benefit of being accepted as an official Matterport Service Provider. Dan |

Yea...this kinda sucks. I'm been trying to talk to our client about this topic and how we can't offer a one-time fee for tours to be online for longevity. I've offered up the Google Street View...but they don't like it. It strips out all the details that they like. They've decided to cancel virtual tours on their projects until I can come up with a better alternative. Ugh.

I purchased a lot of products or services over the past that have offered lifetime styled promises. There's an expiration date to lifetime promises. You need to explain to them that that's typically how it's done. What I would do if I were you is in your terms of service agreement specify that lifetime means 5 years, or 7 years or whatever you want it to be. It's financially impossible to offer anything forever nowadays. Not even marriage. Not any job. Nothing is forever. It's truly incomprehensible to hear about the greed, gall and insanity of some of these requests you are getting. You might be better chasing down higher quality customers who respect you. I don't see any respect at this point my friend. And I sold cars for over 20 years and I'll tell you that people that don't want you to make a penny will never ever be happy. Your happiest customers will always be the ones who pay the most! Because they see the value in you and your product. |

SOLUTION: The client decided that 360 images were just as good as the virtual tour. We elected to go with Kuula ($144/yr - Unlimited Hosting). It requires a little more touch-up on our end to link the files together, but we're not scanning the whole space in detail like with Matterport. We're just scanning the center of main rooms, etc. Until Matterport can come up with a less expensing solution for maintaining virtual tours online, this will be the route our client goes. |
