Hi Folks! Tomorrow [Friday, 10 November 2017] is my first shooting at a Catamaran. Has anyone who has scanned a boat/Yacht before can give me any tip? I plan to start with the lower holds and then go up to the deck. The shooting will be from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm (sunset) I hope the sun doesn't interfere too much to capture the main deck. Many thanks in advance |

@DroneProjects Here are We Get Around Network Forum discussions tagged: Yacht and Boat Andy of these discussions / examples helpful? Also, If the sun can see your camera, that will likely result in scan failure or a messed up viewing experience. Plan your shoot so that you are indoors during the shoot and know where the sun is so you can plan your transition to the deck. For example, you can scan in sunlight if the yacht is blocking it from the camera. Clouds do not solve the problem. Scan the outdoor decks last. Consider using 360º Views for outside. In Matterport Workshop, you may want to hide the dollhouse view. (Best handled in WP3D Models, though you can do this with Matterport parameters. Best, Dan |

Please, if you want to move this post to the thread that corresponds to it, there is no problem. I think I have planned the shooting at the correct times as you have recommended, I will start with the lower holdsr and go up to the deck (which I will match with the sunset) I will also include a 360 photo and we will make some aerial shot with one of my drones to integrate it in the visit. I hope everything goes well tomorrow. Thank you very much You can be sure that I will share the results here XD |

Hi @DanSmigrod thanks for asking I'm a little frustrated, I could not complete the deck and the fly bridge. I planned my shooting at sunset time ..at my local time the sun comes down at 17:40 (the sun is hidden in the horizon but still I have 30 min light to work i think is called "the golden hour" So I was planning to be in deck shooting at this time. But we started an hour earlier, this afternoon was especially cloudy and the sun was low, the boat was not receiving direct sunlight, so I've decided to start from the dock and then get in the catamaran. Everything has been perfect during the first 10 scans, and then alignment problems have started to arise. I've been dealing with them to the point of running out of light, so I decided to abort the scan of the deck and I started with the cabins. With the cabins, there has not been any problem, despite being a narrow place with steep stairs it has been a piece of cake . I have had many problems of alignment (I don't know if by IR ( sunlight) or because it is a very repetitive and bright surface or maybe for all those reasons at the same time. I will try again tomorrow and take with me a bit of tape to make a marks and help align the scans. even though I have taken 360 photos just in case Many thanks .. I will keep you informed. |

@DroneProjects Ugh! Thanks for the detailed notes. 1. Start over from scratch 2. Do NOT begin outside. ONLY begin inside. Those first scans are critical. 3. When scanning outdoors, the camera can NOT see the sun. Clouds do NOT block IF. 4. Sun reflections in glass or metal are just like sunlight 5. Watch that scans are where you expect them 6. When you think it is too dark to scan - twilight - after the sun has set, that is your "golden hour" to scan outdoors: not "Golden Hour" for a typical glamour photo shoot. You will think it is too dark. It's actually perfect. The Camera will do GREAT! Looking forward to hearing how Saturday (11 November 2017) goes for you. Best, Dan |

The work is done @DanSmigrod I'm not completely happy with the result on the fly bridge in the doll house,I was doing it in low light and has given a smoky effect to the rest of the boat .. I think I'll have to hide the DH button. Or maybe I should eliminate those scans from the model? The rest has been incredibly well, only in one of the bow areas there was no way to scan. ( image added) On the other hand, I will ask the owner if I can access the boat once more and repeat the fly bridge scans. There are many topics that I would like to comment,I´m learning a lot with this work. |

@DroneProjects I would disable the dollhouse view in Matterport Workshop. If you use WP3D Models Wordpress Plugin, you can change the thumbnail of the 3D Tour to an exterior 2D photo Link to the tour? Dan P.S. Please do share with us what you learned scanning this project ... |

Hello, Finally, I've got the opportunity to repeat all scannings in the Fly Bridge, now is much better !! I've even been able to complete the ones on the main deck !!! Yes @DanSmigrod you can be sure I'll share the complete experience and lessons learned. I'm still working adding mattertags in the model. When it´s done I'll share it here. |

Welcome on board !! Please enjoy the visit Now as I have promised I'll share, my experience. TIPS to scan a boat/yatch : If you want to scan the deck you have to know that the light (sunlight) is VERY important. -Plan your shooting at the hours indicated for outdoor scanning (30min before sunrise or 30min after sunset) once finished this 30min window is time to stop outside scans( If sunlight hits directly ) -Never make scans after 30 minutes after sunset, the camera will not have enough light and your model will have a "smoked" effect ( as I showed in a previous post) - If the boat is really big, may you have to consider to do in two different days ( as in my case) In this case you must continue with the same time hour you had on the previous day(s) -The sun's reflections on the bright surfaces should be taken as direct sunlight and may cause defects in the model or alignment problems during the scanning process . Try to avoid them. -To avoid aligning problems, place the camera in shorter distances than in normal indoor conditions. -Remember that planning is very important, I think the best time is to arrive before sunset, at noon, and start with the lower cabins and go up to the main deck (matching this with the 30 min low IF) -Inside scanning is a piece of cacke, even for a rookie like me. I hope this can help the comunity & dan if you want to relocate this to the right |
