Great article on Matterport's "Computational 3D sensing" by SPAR3D Editor Sean Higgins

SPAR3D (13 February 2019) Matterport Cortex gets quick 3D from 360° photos using AI and computer vision

Excerpt from the SPAR3D Article

"With this release [Matterport Cloud 3.0], Matterport now offers users the ability to upload 360° photos and turn them into 3D models. By enabling the use of sub-$400 device for 3D capture, Cloud 3.0 brings an extremely affordable option into the Matterport portfolio. But the real story is in how Matterport processes this data. Tomer Poran, senior business development manager at Matterport, explains that this functionality exploits the company’s Cortex technology, which is an AI-powered, computer-vision processor that infers 3D models from the 360° data. (Read: this solution is not taking the 360° images and generating a model with photogrammetry.)"

"That means it’s still good enough for a lot of applications. It could work in real estate, home inspection, and the growing property insurance market where most users have never seen a terrestrial 3D scanner. But it could also find fans in AEC and FM, where firms already own a number of 360° cameras and 360° tour applications have already gained a significant foothold."

"Beyond offering industries that already use 3D capture an even lower-cost method for getting their data, it could find users among homeowners who want a quick capture of their space for applications like interior design or insurance documentation."

"Cortex over the next year is to reduce the capture time—with Cortex today you’re doing around 7,000 or 8,000 square feet an hour, and we want to take it to at least double that. Once you can get the 15,000 foot space with Cortex, we believe it will be an even better fit for the visual documentation market.”"

"The company also has more training data coming in regularly—Poran says the platform is adding 100,000 scans a month."

Note: I have attended the SPAR3D Expo & Conference twice. It's an excellent conference and expo for a deep dive into scanning meets the AEC space. The next SPAR3 Expo and conference is 21-23 May 2019 in Anaheim, California.

Best,

Dan

This is pretty interesting, is there a way to pull accurate floorplans from this?

I think the did not use HDR (and Theta V offers this option), if not photo quality should be better.

@htimsabbub23

Matterport is not presently offering floor plans, according to a rep in the Matterport booth at #ICNY19.

That said, it would be great to try to place an order and see what happens.

You could always use a laser measure for a couple of keyeansurementa and let WGAN Premium Members Blue-Sketch or MP2FP know the key measurements to scale the floor plans correctly.

Thoughts?
