What's the best tool for Zillow 3D?8207

So learning which tool would be best for shooting Zillow 3D has been an issue for me this year? I recently lost my VR Kit I was using for Zillow 3D tours to a garage fire.

When replacing my burned up equipment, I questioned if there was a product that could work better than the VR Kit that burned up. Keep in mind, we have to use the Zillow 3D app through an Iphone (Sorry Android) to take images that would stitch into a 360. I was spending about 30 minutes shooting Zillow 3D for about 10-14 shots. I wanted something faster and easier to level. I turned to the TurnsPro for about a week and a half. I thought there would be some features that could allow me to adjust the amount of time it took to shoot.

The TurnsPro allowed me to adjust my spin around time down to about 33 seconds to capture a whole spin if I had no alignment errors. The VR Kit had me locked to 40 or 60 seconds, the 20 second option was too fast for the Zillow 3D app to capture. The TurnsPro also required me to set the number of rotations I planned to use. To be safe I could bump to 40 or more rotations knowing I would end up spinning about 20 times with spin around errors.

I gave up on the TurnsPro and went back to the VR Kit. The TurnsPro base had a bad seam between the 2 arcs making a round circle. I was worried I could end up with a broken product very quickly. This seam also didn’t help for leveling around the sides if the eye and tripod level were not accessible. The Turnspro was so wide, I could not see my tripod level.

The cellphone mount that came with the TurnsPro was flimsy. You do not want to pick up your tripod and walk to the next scan location knowing your phone could slip out of the holder and crash very easily. Sure you could buy another cell phone mount and place it on the tripod and I doubt you would exceed the weight limits of the motor. I believe the TurnsPro can handle up to 6 lbs. keep in mind I had already spend $100 when the VR kit was $30 less not needing a cellphone mount.

I didn’t like the idea of having to setup the TurnsPro at every shoot to get the rotation speed set as well as number of rotations. With the VR Kit you could Turn the thing on, set it to 40 seconds and hit Start/Stop whenever you need. The VR kit is skinny enough to see my level on the tripod.

So I went back to the VR Kit for about a week and what happens? Zillow 3D software can now be used with the Ricoh Theta V. I have had the Ricoh Theta S, but the Zillow 3D software will not work with that camera today (maybe later). I bought the Theta V immediately. This is the time saver! No more cut off images with nasty stitching errors. Floor to ceiling shots and faster shoot times for Zillow 3D. Ricoh Theta V is the way to go!

Given a choice of using a Ricoh Theta V or an iPhone and a rotator, the answer to which to use may not be obvious. I discussed this topic with Dermandar (theVRkit) Founder Elie Gregoire Khoury (@egkhoury) earlier in 2018 on this WGAN-TV Live at 5 show:
