Hi to all,
I really appreciate & enjoy the forum activity, thanks for all your energized input!

I'm being asked to scan a Mercedes Van interior for a client looking to convert it to a camper. As he plans his layout and placement of various fixtures and storage tanks etc, he wants to create a CAD model (even a crude one) and I'm doing a MP scan tomorrow of inside and exterior (including we hope a scan of undercarriage while it's up on a lift). I hope to use the .OBJ(s) to create a CAD model through one of the 3rd party companies here that may be willing to take this on.
The goal is to get some (rough) measurements from something that can be viewed in CAD. In order to best help him, does anyone have experience, advice or paid CAD conversion services that may help us with this? Thanks!

Photogrammetry & RealityCapture would do a much better job.

You could also consider Creaform or Artec 3D scanner that are more appropriate for precision work.

Photogrammetry result is relative, so you'd better put a ruler in the Van.
Capture the ruler when you take photos for photogrammetry.

You can try Photoscan from Agisoft.com it is cheaper than Reality Capture.
Or you can send the photos to JuMP team, we have license of Photoscan and the more accute one Acute3D.
We can generate the Mesh for your van as a free sample.

You need take many photos for photogrammetry to get good result.

For example below motor is the best one I have ever seen in photogrammetry scan. It took 652 images.

@Nicolas, -thanks for your good wishes, and I appreciate the advice on photogrammetry. We really wanted to try Matterport method as an experiment. I know there are more high resolution methods such as Artec Eva as you mentioned and structured light scanners (which my company does offer as services), but they require a lot more time / effort / expense, so we'll have fun experiment with MP and see how it does.

@Gerhard -what a treasure trove! Many thanks for compiling all that info, that will be very helpful, and great to know about that.

@Jump, -thank you for the photogrammetry tips, I am familiar with that method also, it's a great motorbike example!

We'll see how it goes today, and (if allowed by client) I hope to share results with you.

I think the scanning from matterport is ok for visuals but accuracy of measurements will be questionable at best. The other methods mentioned in the post look good but also quite time consuming….

If you have the year and model of the vehicle then measurements or possibly even cad models will be available already which would be perfect for just working out a layout of the interior. Then if required the “OBJ” or “point cloud” can be integrated for better rendering .

The video below is a quick render from a cad file I had created just to show some of the possibilities (even without the scan data)

@ Mimax, thank you for the rendering, very cool!

So I wanted to share the results with you on the van. Found out some interesting things, -most importantly, I can confirm that the XYZ point cloud you receive in a MatterPak. Is higher resolution (greater point density) than the .obj mesh file, -about double the resolution actually! So that worked in our favor for the van scan results.

We took 3 scans: inside van, undercarriage, and exterior van, and got .obj and XYZ point cloud for all 3.

Best way to show the data quality is from screen shots below, note the difference between .obj and .XYZ! (.XYZ are last 2 pics)

My client hopes to use Spaceclaim software to create a useable CAD model from the results ( a high end software specially for working with mesh data to parametric CAD). Pics are below.
