Hi All,

Matterport to Google Street View publishing launches 23 January 2018. That's my prediction.

What are your Matterport predictions for 2018?

Happy New Year,

Dan

@Radie842 You think they are going to come out with another camera May of 2018?

Maybe not in may. But eventually I would think they would start rolling out new products every 18 months. I think we are going to see a camera with a smaller footprint. A removable battery. And even maybe direct upload to the cloud!!!

@Radie842 Remember, the data that is captured by the camera is transmitted, processed and stored on the iPad. Don't hold your breathe for direct upload from camera to cloud

It's hard to predict where Matterport will go in 2018. Who would have guessed at the surprise announcement of the RoOomie partnership last week? This seems to be a promise to fulfill the 'Design Studio' tech demo that was announced in Matterport's first year.

Matterport have announced Google Street View - which is now in public BETA.

Matterport have talked about SDKs -- there are BETA programs for SDKs although we have only really seen a hint with the Hexagon partnership (minimap navigation / integration).

The Pro-2 has GPS built in and we haven't really seen this utilized.

Matterport has sent out surveys with questions about features that we would find interesting ... perhaps we will see new features in Capture to make our lives easier.

Matt Bell left the company after releasing a computer learning library of sorts that was incubated inside of Matterport -- the identification of objects within photos seems to be something that we'll likely see pop-up inside of Matteport tech.

But perhaps most importantly

Will we finally see a deal that gives Matterport tours better visibility on Zillow and Trulia? AirBNB?

My guesses
- Ipad backup solution
- obj/dollhouse preview on iPad
- ceiling/floor trim tool
- leica blk360 integration (kind of a MPPro3)
- VR on rift and vive
- and hopefully VR Mattertags

I hope they will update the storage plans.

If the goal is to give services for several years and you accumulate hundreds of models, you can not start running after hundreds of customers and ask them for money to continue and store their model.

Customers like museums, restaurants, hotels, etc. who use the model as part of their marketing plan expect the photography to be accessible to them for quite a few years.
These customers will not purchase separate storage if they have a single model or several very small models.

Matterport's business model is to sell the camera and turn the distributors into a kind of lifetime customer that pays them usage fees every month. Excellent for Matterport, but from the point of view of distributors it became a very difficult business and not always profitable at the end, especially when the market will come with new technologies that are much cheaper.

And i think for the Matterport - Google street view partnership, for this kind of service i think Google can afford to offer free or relatively cheap hosting service as they do for the Google Drive service.

One of the biggest challenges is scanning exteriors that form part of 3D tours and walkthroughs - not independent / underlying 360 views.

As we are aware, Matterport recently signalled a potential partnership with Leica re. the Leica BLK 360 in 2018.

Other than a NDA, commercial etiquette and patents, what is preventing Matterport from developing an upgraded Pro 3 3D Laser Scanner (develop or cross licence components) that can work outdoors with an increased range 10-20 metres (33'-66') & improved accuracy for AEC e.g. 5mm @ 10m (currently 1% tolerance which is ambiguous for Pro BIM) and Virtual Tours / Models that work seamlessly internally & externally?

It is not in the best interest of the leading Pro Laser Scanner providers; Faro, Leica, Trimble etc. to provide lower cost laser scanners as they risk cannibalising the sales of their advanced scanners.

However, Matterport has more to gain in the middle ground and no doubt most of the hardware can be reverse engineered assuming they can avoid infringing patents or finding alternative methods combining their existing knowhow.

or

Potentially a Joint Venture to create Matterport / Leica 3D Camera Scanner - best of both?

Any thoughts on this?
