I have shot hundreds of spaces with a ball head and have had no problems. They are much faster for leveling the camera than other options.

@RichardByers For busy, professional photographers such as @JonJ a ball head is fine. For the rest of us - do NOT use a ball head. Here is the quick release - and leveler - I recommend. Dan |

@JonJ Compliment. You know what you are doing and it is party of your muscle memory. Me? I would miss locking the ball and have the Camera flop and crash. Dan |

@DanSmigrod...Ball heads are the [redacted], easily level in seconds, we use the ball head along with a torpedo level every-time we move the Camera I would highly recommend one to any MSP.... |

I like to employ the good ole eyeball level! These things are great! I never forget to bring it and they are super fast and cheap. Once you get proficient with scanning, you can scan a space pretty quickly and efficiently without sacrificing quality. Yesterday I scanned a beautiful beach house (5000 sqft - 6000 sqft) in just under 2 hours, start to finish. I still need to edit it, but it took 107 scans. |

I use the Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head. Very easy to use and works great on stairs. |

@JonJ - I think I'm going to get a ballhead mount myself as the DLEV just doesn't do it for me. I cannot get things level half the time, spend too much time messing with it, and think that like you, I'd get faster results from a ball head mount.

If you ever find a ball head drifting under weight even when locked well, check that the ball did not get grease on it from inside the head. You can clean it using rubbing alcohol - wet a tissue, slide into the opening in the head where you see the ball, rotate the ball around, then let it dry. It is important to buy a ball head rated for the weight of the equipment plus some safety margin. That means having a larger ball diameter.
