Hey everyone, I had a scan recently with mirrors on ceilings that looks pretty bad because of the artifacts above the room. https://my.matterport.com/models/Nat23yERepp I was hoping someone might know of a solution they could share. (unfortanitly rescanning is not a reasonable option). Thanks for the help! Alex
from Matterport:
Hello Alex,

That some creative troubleshooting on you part! Personally i think the marking of the shelves produced the most pleasing results.

Unfortunately there currently isn't a method for marking horizontally mounted mirrors (or skylights for that matter). Clearly this would be a useful feature for these types of situations. I will pass along this suggestion to the product team for further consideration.

Moving scan to a different floor will have no effect. Editing the obj isnt an option either as once modified it cannot be imported back in the model.

Other than just living with the artifacts (or marking the shelves as you did), the workaround is to physically cover the mirrors with a materials that makes them none reflective, and rescanning.

Regards,

Bob

Hey Guys,

I just did a scan for Sally Beauty supply, anyways the scan went well except for the mirrors on the celling (used to prevent theft I think). Are causing some significant artifacts above the model in the 3D-Showcase. View the scan here.

I tried marking the shelves as windows or mirrors and this did reduce the artifacts but made for very odd looking airspace above the shelving.

A thought the new floor separation could maybe make the artifacts a separate floor but don't know how this will turn out since all the scans were taken from the exact same elevation. I marked one scan as 2nd floor and upladed it here (have not seen the results as it is processing)

I know marking mirrors is a easy fix when on the walls but mirrors that are tilted or on celling or floor seem to have no workaround, at least from our end. Maybe I can cut these out of the obj and then resend you the obj if that would work?

Thanks,

I had the same problem with a mirror embedded in a coffee table ... no workaround.

I know rescanning isn't an option, but I had an idea that might be better for future mirrored ceilings than the Matterport suggestion:

Instead of covering the ceiling with something, you could probably fashion a mask for the camera, something like a piece of thick cardboard or foamboard painted black, and mounted securely to the top of the camera. As long as it didn't wiggle much while the camera was moving, it might work to block out the ceiling.

It might also confuse the camera into thinking that the ceiling was right above the camera, which would not be so good. But could be worth a try.
