Hi All, Here's my 360-video postcard to you from our family union in St. Simons Island, Georgia today. I thought you would like to see how the camera does at 100 mph. A beautiful sky today (6 July 2016) with puffy clouds. And, Yes. I traded this 360-degree video for my flight ![]() Dan P.S. Can one of you explain why the propeller looks like it is spinning slowly (while it is not)? Must be an easy explanation or term for this. ![]() Photo: Classic Air Ventures Captain Phil and Matterport User Group Founder Dan Smigrod (right) | Image by: Mike ![]() |

I believe the slow propeller is a byproduct of the video frame rate and shutter speed. I've seen videos that show helicopters flying with what looks like a stationary rotor.

Dan, good footage (where's the aerobatics?!). As John said, the propeller issue is common with video due to shutter speeds. Would look great without that issue though.

The artifacts in the prop are caused primarily by the rolling shutter in the CMOS camera sensor. Also I would have rotated the camera 90 degrees as the stitch line bi-sects the horizon.

@Biggles The acrobatics were so fast, you could not see them ![]() @TrustedPhotoDC Yes! I was curious to see how the two seams would look. In addition to holding the camera with two hands, it was attached to a Nodal Ninja mono-pole planted at my feet. With the wind, I'm not sure I could have held on to the camera free-hand. Aside from trading 360-degree video for fun experiences like a biplane flight, what else moves that Pros could offer this service? Dan |

Video: 360ยบ spherical video of the annual St. Simons Island, Georgia 4th of July (2016) parade. It's an example of Ricoh Theta S + selfie pole (standing and walking.) Dan |

@DanSmigrod First, I like the bi-plane video. It is the perfect composition for a consumer camera. Edit the sound, maybe a few cuts & clean up the audio tracks then (toss iMove and use Premiere Pro, 360 editing is now baked in, no need for a plugins) publish a nice video. While we know that the 1080 of the Theta S is not optimum for professional work, it does allow getting into a tight place like the cockpit of the plane. I've got over $20k in new 360 rigs coming in the next few months and one would be better suited mounted with clamps to the wing, the other is too large to hand-hold in a tight space, but neither are a good fit for holding in the open cockpit. The parade has the big issue of not being stabilized. To use a pole and stabilize the camera, you need something like a Kenyon rig at the bottom of the pole. Wobbly, un-stabilized footage makes people puke. FYI, I understand you were just creating examples. http://www.ken-lab.com/ https://youtu.be/u_mpwOtf5n8 No matter what, story will be the deciding factor if 360 video works or doesn't. Right now, its still early, remember all the cat videos on YouTube? |
