This past weekend I was in Southern California and stopped by Altadena, CA where the Eaton Fire started. Here's a video of my drive down some of the streets. The overwhelming and immense destruction that occurred has caused 1 unfortunate opportunity to get a Matterport camera out and start scanning... here are some use cases: 1. Insurance Claims & Adjustments Detailed 3D Documentation: Capture accurate and immersive digital twins of fire-damaged properties for insurance claims processing. Claims Validation: Helps policyholders, adjusters, and insurance companies verify losses with precise before-and-after comparisons. Remote Assessments: Reduces the need for on-site inspections, speeding up the claims process and minimizing disputes. 2. Fire & Disaster Recovery Planning Damage Assessment for Restoration: Provides a comprehensive visual record to aid restoration professionals in developing repair plans. Structural Analysis: Enables engineers and construction teams to assess burned structures, foundation stability, and material integrity. Documentation for FEMA & Relief Organizations: Used for federal disaster relief claims and rebuilding efforts by FEMA, Red Cross, and other agencies. 3. Legal & Liability Investigations Litigation Evidence: Attorneys and investigators can use Matterport scans as evidence in lawsuits involving negligence, faulty power lines, or property damage disputes. Fire Origin Analysis: Fire investigators can examine digital reconstructions to determine how the fire spread and what areas were most impacted. 4. Public Safety & Future Fire Prevention Training for Firefighters & First Responders: Fire departments can use 3D scans of fire-damaged sites to improve future emergency response training. Risk Assessments & Urban Planning: City planners and environmental agencies can analyze burned areas to improve fire mitigation strategies and building codes. 5. Historical Preservation & Community Records Digital Archiving of Destroyed Landmarks: If historic buildings (e.g., Altadena Community Church or Andrew McNally House) were affected, Matterport can preserve their layouts digitally for potential rebuilding. Community Awareness & Education: Local governments and organizations can use 3D tours to educate residents on fire impact and preparedness. 6. Real Estate & Property Sales Burned Property Listings: Real estate agents and property developers can use Matterport scans of fire-damaged properties to sell land for redevelopment. Reconstruction Visualization: Builders can create side-by-side 3D comparisons of pre-fire and post-fire conditions to help clients envision restoration projects. Here's a structured service offering for any Matterport professionals specializing in fire damage documentation and recovery efforts, particularly in cases like the Eaton Fire. Feel free to use this in your marketing materials if you can. Matterport Disaster & Fire Damage Documentation Services Professional 3D Imaging for Insurance, Restoration, & Legal Needs ![]() 1. Since the fires I have been engaged on two fire-related projects. One was being contacted by the owner of a destroyed home right on the beach, seeking the Matterport we had previously captured for insurance and rebuilding purposes. The other came from the owner of a partially destroyed home in the Palisades that firefighters had saved but had suffered profound smoke damage. We had to work all day wearing P100 respirators as even N95s were insufficient to filter the acrid smell. The destruction is truly horrific and I respect our stateβs efforts to prevent price gouging and commence the huge cleanup project ahead. |

@ScanYourSpace Thank you for sharing your 360 video. I can't even imagine what that driving experience was like. Your video gives some insight. And, thanks for the notes. That will be helpful for those involved in a natural disaster. @Home3D I could imagine that that the Matterport tour that you had saved was super-helpful to the homeowner for both insurance claim documentation and rebuilding. For the partially destroyed/smoke damaged home, how did you know that you had the right safety gear? Dan |

We knew that the particulate matter of smoke hangs around a long time. You can open all the windows but even with a breeze, that stuff stays. It coats every surface in a house. Smoke cleanup is a huge undertaking. A couple years ago we had researched respirators and purchased some P100s, which are more powerful than even the best N95s. They work. Even outside the home the smell was apparent. Inside is was awful. But with the P100s we couldn't smell it at all, as long as you make sure to get a secure fit around your face. Not my favorite way to spend a day, but getting that stuff in your lungs is bad. It's not just the smell, it stays in there and reduces your lungs' ability to function. I have immense respect for what firefighters are up against and the risks their profession entails. These people are heroes. |
