Hi Spencer. For years I have backed up our iPads using iMazing. Connect the iPad to your Mac with a cable, then all the folders and applications appear similar to a Finder window. Navigate the Apps folder to locate Matterport and copy the entire Jobs folder. All your capture data is there. Matterport does make it a little tough to understand the identity of each job, as the file names are all gibberish. But if you have a calendar log of all your scan jobs, you can figure out by the date created. Also, in each folder will be at least one .jpg image, which is the minimap view when the job ended. I can often recognize the site by looking at these. Also, using iMazing you can copy any ancient MP job file back to your iPad and reprocess to re-create a model that was deleted. Very useful. Bottom line, all scan data should be backed up from iPads. It has saved me a couple times and worth it just for that. IMazing has never let me down. |

Great info on imazing and I think you gave me that in the past. I have recently backed up a few project, it seems... matterport added the export - which makes a zip file, I moved that to my computer and saved in on a drive and in a cloud. However, I like your approach with a more visual directory - this is very slow and tedious. I did do some of this last time we met, but now I 'm getting more into it and want to be sure I have a full and robust backup, as we all should. I have a second question - in this method of exporting these files to my hard drive, and then deleting the ones I know I don't need out of my app - the app is going the wrong way via memory - it's getting more full. Clearly this could mean I'm loading this stuff into my icloud but .. I removed it from my computers icloud linked files and put it on a drive that is not connected to iPad. Any thoughts on this? I was really looking forward to a healthier app with less data that might function better. And just in general removing size from my ipad of the matterport capture app. Thanks Spencer |

Hi @SpencerLasky I haven't seen what you describe, so not sure what's up. When I use iMazing to backup the JOBS folder in the Matterport capture app on the iPad, I then have a complete set of all capture data of all the jobs currently on that iPad. This is identical to the data that Matterport now can "restore" to your iPad from their cloud, but with one caveat. Any project that you have captured, processed to a model, but subsequently DELETED from your active models on your Matterport hosting (you stopped paying monthly charge to maintain by deleting the model from your dashboard) has now also been deleted from Matterport's archive. Here's how I learned. A client for whom I've scanned about a two dozen homes under construction, opened his own MP acct and asked me to transfer the models to his acct. I transferred them, but one model, scanned many years ago, I had deleted from my own hosting acct as it had not been used for years by the client. This model no longer existed in my account, and therefore MP said it could not be "restored" to my iPad in order to reprocess and send the model to my client. So, in this manner, it is best to periodically keep a complete backup of all projects directly from the iPad, rather than depend on "restoring" from MP servers later on. The back up takes a little time, but can simply run while you sleep or do other work. The only "work" involved in this kind of complate backup is identifying the project address which each set of capture data belongs to, as the folder and file names are all jibberish. What I do to simplify this process is keep a calendar of the dates of all captures with addresses, and also check the "jpg" file in each project in the JOBS folder. These .jpg images are of the minimap and usually help confirm my memory, the identity of each project. Then I take the folder of all the scan data of each job and place it into another folder named to the capture project, for example the address or institution. Makes it really easy to go back and find them later using human logic. |

Yes good notes! - I kind of do that, but I use photographs to jog my memory so I can look it up in my iPhone's photo app, and I have been helped many times by doing that. I guess what I'm experiencing is that the iPad gets fuller when I delete the archived projects, not less full. And as far as I know, it's not going to the iCloud as I'm removing the transferred files - it's kind of crazy to see it going in this direction! thanks |
