FloorsLargeParking Lot

Multi-storey parking lot, some floors pancaked together20585

Hi all,
I have done many large scans before, but never a parking lot. Just did a 4 floor garage with ramps that join the floors in one big rectangular spiral. I carefully separated the floors in capture, but when processed, some floors were smushed together. I thought I wouldn't need stairs in this case, due to the ramps.
Now I need to decide, do I go back and do a set of stairs in one corner and re-process?
OR should I just let Matterport fix it (which I've already asked for and may take 5-10 days I'm told)
OR should I separate the scan into 4 floors, upload them separately as 4 new scans, and then try Matterport's new "join floors yourself" tool which I think is available now (or is it)?

Advice welcome! Thank you

WGAN-TV | Matterport 2024 Fall Release: Defurnish; Merge Models; Field Tagging; AI Property Descriptions | Guest: Scan Your Space (a Division of Sparks Media Group) Founder and CEO Tom Sparks | Thursday, 24 October 2024 | Episode: 229 www.ScanYourSpace.com | www.SparksMediaGroup.com | @ScanYourSpace

@Noddy

Ugh!

Recommendation:

✓ Create four 4 floors and upload them separately as 4 new scans; then use Matterport Merge Models tool to assemble.

When you create floors on an iPad, for example, that is only for your visual reference. Matterport does NOT use your floor indications to determine floors.

@Noddy

Perhaps @ScanYourSpace or @Jamie can comment about the availability of Matterport Merge Models feature.

Matterport referenced Merge Models again today (Monday, 30 December 2024) in this Matterport media release.

Happy holidays,

Dan

@Noddy, I’m curious if before you hit the “Process” button, did you have “automatic floor detection” toggled on or off? If it was on. Create a duplicate of the job and reprocess with “automatic floor detection” toggled off. I always toggle it off. My experience has been poor with their auto floor detection.

Most Matterport scan services, mine included, have been on the waiting list for several of the new features. I’ve been on the list since early October and MP won’t give me a ETA. They just said to wait for an email confirmation.

In your mymatterport.com, go to your Account then click settings (gear icon) then to Features-New to verify if the new features like Merge Space, Field Tags and Import-Export Tags features are available. My guess is they are not unless you are on the waitlist. Click on the toggles to get on the waiting list.
I have seen request for help from some asking others with the Merge feature available to assist. You’d just need to make them a temporary collaborator. Good luck!

Best,
Charlie Grimm

Thanks Dan & Charlie for your advice, very helpful.

@ Charlie: So I initially processed the scan with auto floor detection toggled on & it was pancaked, so I made a small change to a trim & re-uploaded it with auto-floor detection toggled off, -still got pancaked floors (in fact it looked worse). That's when I called Matterport.

I've decided to be pro-active and go back tomorrow to scan a complete corner stairwell (4 floors), and im case I really need that I'll have it in the bag. Could be tricky in that the lot is mostly (but not completely) empty, & there may be vehicles that have moved around when I'm back for the stairs, but hopefully the algorithms will understand!

@ Dan: I could imagine that even if I did the 4 separate floors and tried the "self-join-floors" method later, the software might need the stairs to anchor things properly, even though I do have several overlapping scans on the ramp areas. I hope one complete stairs should be enough since the ramps are done already!

Just FYI, it's a massive parking lot, each floor is about 330 ft long x 175 ft wide, luckily there were lots of pillars and some random vehicles to help align the scans, so I really had very little problems with alignment during the scanning, using my Pro3. All 4 floors were in total about 500 spins. I could have done less than that, but wanted to capture a lot of detail and viewpoints for a good point cloud, and avoid any misalignment woes.

Happy New year all you 3D scan folks!

@Noddy What you are describing is always a problem with uploading with Auto detect floors set to on. I can see you've tried to do with it off but are you sure it has been set to off?
There is refurnish, Blur faces and Auto detect floors switches usually shown before uploading. It is really easy to be confused, also if you set it to OFF but then switched an account you are uploading to it will reset to On again. And it won't remember its state meaning, you set it to off, uploaded one job and you want to upload a next one it is most likely to reset to On again.

Matterport seems to be ignoring this issue with this feature. It should not be activated by default and for sure it should remember all previous settings. Everyday somebody's on MOUG on Facebook asking why floors are screwed up and every time it is coming from Auto Detect Floors set to On.

If your floors are separated in your job in the Capture app they should not merge or change anyway if Auto Detect is not set to On. I did not experience any problem with floors until they injected this feature and set it by default to On.

Update on the multi-storey car park:
@ Wingman, thank you for your input re: the auto detect. I did try it both with and without that setting on, and pancaked both times. I also went back and scanned one set of stairs all the way up, processed , and pancaked again.
BUT -Good news, today I just got the original scan back from Matterport and it's all fixed! (Thanks to Nick at MP for a good job & fast turnaround)
Screenshots below, hopefully. So in total 4 and a bit floors, all one scan, Pro3 500 spins, and total of just over 0.25 million square feet. Pro3 did great. That's a record size for me for one single scan model. What's the largest Sq. Ft in a single scan you guys have seen / done?

Interesting case. Have they told you what gone wrong?

The biggest I believe I have done was with a Pro2 and it has almost 1200 scans

I also did an expedition centre with about 10000 sqm but it is not even 1000 scan points as it has a lot of empty spaces. Also with a Pro2
There were plenty big spaces with a Pro3 but not even close to 1200 scans. May be if we merge three tours done for Sea World resort it can come to 600 scans but the one below with just pool area which is huge is only 370 scans
