Please - was wondering your thoughts about next generation smart phones offering 360degrees feature - I'm thinking even on Matterport site they reference their being in position to capitilize on this development - will this hinder or assist the Matterport 3D camera business? Respectively Jim M |

I think, we need to qualify what a "360 feature" means on a phone. Is it the ability to capture a photo sphere with one shot, like the Ricoh Theta camera? Then there is no competition with MP, as we are comparing apples (flat photos) to oranges (3D). If phones will start featuring depth sensors, then MP seems to be well positioned to capture that audience by making their software available and compatible with the new hardware. They might lose potential buyers for their bigger scanner, but I bet they will offset those losses by gaining new customers on their subscription model. A possible threat would be virtual tour platforms that offer such a good experience using regular 360 photos, that would make MP tours less special. We know some of those platforms already (Pano2VR, KRPano, PanoTour, Roundme, YouVisit...), but they seem to serve a different type of experience. |
