Matterport scanning automation?16139

Alexvr private msg quote post Address this user
Scanning large industrial spaces may be time consuming, especially when it needs to be repeated multiple times. Are there any ways to automate the scanning process? E.g. attach a camera, like Insta360, to some sort of a moving platform/chassis that could navigate through the area and automatically take scans in designated points?

thanks,
Alex

@Alexvr for some big area the Matterport camera may suffer alignment issue, maybe you should apply Matterport AprilTags to the area.
Remote moving platform/chassis for data capture do exist, but most of them are used for 360 video record.
If use it with Matterport there must be a software be developed to control the platform/chassis system otherwise the final result may not efficient compare to you go grab your pro2 move to next location and hide yourself behind the lens.

I am not aware of any system that can do it with Matterport but it is definitely can be built. You will need some tracking inside space which can be made with VSLAM or RFID. However I would say that it is better to create a floor plan first(look at some vacuum cleaners that can build a room map for you). Once you get a floor plan you can place scan points and tell your system to get to each, stay there enough to get a scan done and move to the next.

@Alexvr

Matterport lacks a workflow for weekly construction documentation of very large spaces.

Specifically, Matterport needs to add workflows for:

- Helmet Cam
- Drone Capture [including: dolly, robot (like Spot), backpack and aerial]

You may want to look at:

P.S. Understanding your use-case would be very helpful to recommending a solution.

I read this article a few hours ago about helmet based 360 cameras for construction purposes and it seems like Buildots and Openspace seem to have the lead in the segment.

This article does briefly mentions Matterport.
