Hi..

Does anyone here has an experience with theta Z1 for scanning outdoor?
I scan inside with matterport and the outside with Theta Z1. But I'm not satisfied with the result.

Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks

Marco

Have you tried shooting outside as a 360 and doing a convert to 3D?

@TimothyThomas Yes I've tried with that method, but there is misalignment issue.
So if I change the camera it will be a problem?

I have come to the conclusion that the dollhouse is just a gimmick. One I like but whenever you zoom in on them you see it is just a messy mesh.
If it is really bad - high rooms, beamed ceilings etc, I just switch them off.

Capturing closer together may resolve some of that issue. I dint think you're getting enough data at that distance.

Best of luck. Please post results

This is because of your outside scanning of 3D data.

The capture app and showcase are tuned for indoor environments, so it does not always know what to do with things like tree lines, etc. overlapping. You can use the trim feature to cut away what does not overlap to clean things up a bit.

The splotches are just a lack of 3D data, outside small things over a larger distance = no 3d data. What you WILL get is the outside of the house. This is a problem because of the way most 3D objects work. 3D objects are made up of a bunch of planes (flat surfaces) which a are comprised of faces.

It is one of those faces that the image texture is placed on, but only on one side, which is called the "normal". Because these constructions are made up of a bunch of one sided planes (the texture is only on the "normal" side remember? the other side is invisible.

This effect can cause doll houses to look terrible if you did not scan the entire outside texture of the house. There is not much you can do about all of this unless the tech or tools change. You can mitigate, however. Try to stick to 360 panos for outdoor spots and link them up at a logical viewing point.

More thoroughly scan outdoor areas you must include in your model. This may or may not be possible as it will add a lot of time and scans to your job... so a cost/benefit evaluation must be done in some cases, because do you really need the 3d data out in those spots?

Every job is different. You can also avoid outdoor scans that wrap around corners.

So if you MUST shoot the face of a house, be as complete as you can, but AVOID scanning any planar surfaces around the corner so you do not start to construct a mesh there.

I am sure there are other things, I will add later if I think of them, but every job and every location is unique, so it will take some time to change how you perceive an environment and how it relates to your scan.

Just my 2 cents, and hope that helps!
