Hi All,

Want the benefit of aerial imagery without worrying if you are going to crash a $1,000+ drone?

"We've been building up to this. So it's built for autonomy from the ground up. And what that means, is it understands the environment it's in, where it is in that environment, and what's it's looking at. And so it has six navigational cameras," says Cory Knittel with Business Operations at Skydio in a WGAN-TV interview with Los Angeles-based Home3D.us Chief Photographer Kevin Dole (@Home3D) at the Commercial UAV Expo Americas 2019 in Las Vegas (28-30 October 2019).

"Three on the top, as well as three on the bottom, to be able to use stereo depth to understand and create a 3D map of everything around it. This means that you get full 360 degree collision avoidance of everything around you, and therefore you are not able to run into anything."

"And it works on Apple or Android, and we think it'll be a really, really big tool for being able to use in real estate photographers. So you can focus on getting the shot you want without needing to be a professional pilot."

The Skydio 2 was was announced 1 October 2019 and is scheduled to begin shipping by 30 November 2019.

"So the drone itself sells for a thousand dollars, and then you can buy the additional accessories. So that includes just the drone and the battery, and you'd be able to fly from your phone. A controller is $150, a beacon, same price, and additional batteries are $100. And we'll also be offering a larger pro kit that kind of brings it all together in a hard shelled case," says Cory.

- From the 2019 Commercial [UAV] EXPO Americas here in Las Vegas, I'm Kevin Dole of Home3D.US, from Los Angeles, and I'm here at the Skydio booth.

- Hi, how are you? I'm Cory Knittel, nice to meet you.

- Very nice.

- Thanks for having me.

- I just saw a demonstration of a new drone, which I think everyone's gonna want to be aware of, and here's the explanation.

- All right, so this here is the Skydio 2. It was launched on October 1, [2019] Our company's been around for five years.

We've been building up to this. So it's built for autonomy from the ground up. And what that means, is it understands the environment it's in, where it is in that environment, and what's it's looking at. And so it has six navigational cameras.

Three on the top, as well as three on the bottom, to be able to use stereo depth to understand and create a 3D map of everything around it. This means that you get full 360 degree collision avoidance of everything around you, and therefore you are not able to run into anything.

So, you can use either your phone to fly, or use the range extending controller to be able to have, be able to do the specific movements you want to get the shot you want without the worry of crashing. And it works on Apple or Android, and we think it'll be a really, really big tool for being able to use in real estate photographers. So you can focus on getting the shot you want without needing to be a professional pilot.

- Yeah, one of the things that I found remarkable about their design, this is repeating, but as you see, there are one, two, three, very very wide angle cameras on the top, and three more on the bottom of the drone. And so the drone is continuously stereo looking forward and in all other directions. The entire environment is rendered as a, well it's got stereo vision in every direction because of the 3D.

It's like having Insta 360 One X mounted on the top and the bottom of a drone. So that it's seeing the entire world at the same time and because of multiple lenses it's seeing it in stereo so we can judge, by parallax, the distance of objects that it's approaching. And so that if it's flying towards something that needs to get higher to go, to avoid a collision, it will gradually and smoothly flow up and over that object, even if it's running down a path following a car or some other object. Oh, and talk about the follow functions.

- Yeah, so in terms of something that gets people really excited are a lot of our consumer videos, the ability to follow people or cars. So it can identify people based on a large data set that it's been trained upon, and then basically follow them because it understands, differentiates between myself, yourself based on height, things you're wearing, like anything that you would normally identify a person by, and it can follow you through the woods taking advantage of that same collision avoidance, as well as, you know, doing a ton and ton of compute to understand where a person is, but more importantly where they're going.

- And through use of that device, the person that's being followed might carry that device, right?

- Yeah, so this is our beacon. Flip it around. And so that device, what it does, it extends range based instead of just using your phone's GPS, this has much more robust GPS. It increases the range to about a kilometer in ideal environments. And basically if the drone itself loses you based on vision, it's able to fall back to the GPS, and this device will be able to follow you when you're not in sight, and eventually find you again, and continue to follow you based on vision.

- So imagine someone biking, using the drone to follow them as they bike down a path, and that path leads under trees where the drone can't see the person. Through use of that device, it flies up over the trees and continues to follow the subject along its path. Yeah. So, anyway, this is something I think could be of. Now, this is on the market, or it's very soon, or?

- So it'll begin shipping next month. Made in the U.S., across the street from our headquarters in California, Redwood City. And so we're really excited to start shipping next month. Pre orders are open and have gone pretty incredibly, and so.

- You want to talk about prices a little bit?

- So the drone itself sells for a thousand dollars, and then you can buy the additional accessories. So that includes just the drone and the battery, and you'd be able to fly from your phone. A controller is $150, a beacon, same price, and additional batteries are $100. And we'll also be offering a larger pro kit that kind of brings it all together in a hard shelled case.

- With a case and everything?

- Yeah, exactly

- Is that what we're looking at here?

- Right, and that price is to be released soon. But this is the pro kit here, and that's with fully included there.

- That's great. Well, thank you for your time. Appreciate it.

- Thank you very much.

- Okay. Signing off for the We Get Around Network Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, this is Kevin Dole, in Los Angeles, from Los Angeles. Bye bye [For WGAN-TV].

Removable Micro SD Card - UHS Speed Class 3 / V30

Interesting to note Skydio provides a pretty comprehensive repair or replace warranty to backup their claim of 360° collision avoidance, and the drone’s development, construction, sales and support are all in the U.S. I haven’t flown this (first ships in a few weeks) but it’s compelling to consider.

Camera is also 4K at 60fps, higher res/frame rate than most.
