Matterport + Samsung Gear VR (powered by Oculus) uses both mesh and pano data when viewing models from Matterport 3D Showcase.

The Oculus Rift uses the Matterport object file (.obj) which by definition do not include pano data (only .obj).

Looks good
To move around, are you using the control on the side of gear vr, or the controller?

This is great, but will we be able to input our own models?

Dan

Did you shoot this video or was this done by Matterport?

The Green Navigation circles which appear to guide you along the way how were these inserted?

If so do you need to add these much as you do with Google Business View?

This is a very exciting demo and opens many possibilities for use all.

Thanks for this.

@Jamie @DoyleRealtor @GarySnyder @Pjhenville

Thank you all for your patience. Whew! We're on fire in Atlanta (in a good way) ...

Q: To move around, are you using the control on the side of gear VR or controller or just starring at a dot for a couple of seconds?
A: You navigate by focusing on the float "pucks".

Q: How do we input our own 3D Showcase models?
A: While this is clearly in the plans, Matterport says there are no official process currently exists, nor has a release date been set.

Q: The Green Navigation circles which appear to guide you along the way how were these inserted?
A: The navigation circles are the Gear VR representation of the scan pucks. They are created as part of the conversion process.

Q: Who shot the 3D Showcase?
A: Not us (yet)

Other questions?

Dan

@GarySnyder

Matterport shared with me that the sample Gear VR model is a "modified 3D Showcase model." Additional details public details about the modification have not been announced such as when and how.

Fun to see that the video in this thread has been viewed 180 times in the last two days.

Best,

Dan

I've been asking them about this for months after seeing the demonstration in New Orleans at the NAR conference. They don't seem to be very willing to share many details which is frustrating because I'd like to start using this in my business right away. I'm not sure if I should just go ahead and order the VR now or wait and see if it comes out on other platforms and what the timeline is going to be

This should encourage Matterport to add this to the Showcase ASAP as it will open another market for them. I feel if they don't act quickly within 6 months they'll be many other high quality 3D capture devices on the market for a lot less money. Look at what the 360Cam can achieve for $499.00.

All we need now is to incorporate 3d sound with cue points to describe areas/objects of interest, helping guide the viewer and creat a deeper immersed experience into VR.
The sound stage could even incorporate ambient sounds for realestate, like a radio on in one room, natural sounds from the out side etc.
VR audio tours! Great for Museums, Art Galleries and realestate, the posabilities are endless...

I think VR is the future for Matterpot,
It's a Darwinian view of things evolving.
I just don't believe it has a future as it stands with out VR being in the forfront of its development and marketing strategy, it's the most exiting area for tommorows home entartainment and media markets,it certainly has the wow!! factor to get the attention of a wider audience.
Augmented reality along with VR is close to becoming available to the masses and proves to be a very exiting area for future applications. There's going to be a huge surge in interest over the next couple of years, Matterport are well placed to develop there name in VR.

Matterports future with VR? Is There going to be any advantage using their hardware in the future and whats Being developed witin the company to remain interesting for profesionals?
Post 27 IP   flag post
GarySnyder private msg quote post Address this user
The only current advantage is Matterport makes capturing and producing immersive VR tours very easy. That's not to say that another camera will not come along and do the same thing. As we all know technology is constantly changing and improving and at the same time getting cheaper.
