Following our HoloLens + Matterport demo early this week, we thought to look at Apple ARKit next. ARkit is Apple's new framework to create #AR apps on iOS11. It's currently available in preview to developers. For this demo, we partnered with the Seattle Museum of Flight, where we did numerous scans of their planes. You can access them at http://museumofflight.org/vr. Not all planes are accessible inside, so we created an ARKit app that features an inter-dimensional portal that you can walk through. Everything is in 1:1 scale. As you hold your iPad in hand and walk along the actual aircraft, you cross the virtual portal and enter into the Matterport 3D model. The model is the OBJ that comes from the scan, so it's far from perfect. That said, it's an interesting proof of concept of the possibilities of this tool. Enjoy the experience! Always love seeing your R&D projects! I recently converted part of a Matterport pointcloud to a high resolution OBJ file. Perhaps that's something that could benefit some of your projects. Screenshot below. |
