Tip:How to Get an Upgrade on Your Hotel Room496

When I check-in to a hotel, I ask for the Manager on Duty (MOD) or General Manager to show a Matterport 3D Showcase.

I ask (and often get) a courtesy update and offer to send the model to the MOD (ideally to pass on to the eCommerce team).

Try it on your next vacation or business trip.

Are you bartering? Restaurant trade? Getting upgrades? Other? Share these tips here ...

(Here's my hotel room tonight; Wednesday, 22 July 2015 in NYC.) #happy

Best,

Dan

I have a photographer buddy who has had several trips on barter like that. He calls restaurants and hotels. Stays and eats for free, and increases his portfolio at the same time.

That's great! Have Matterport and travel across the USA. Seriously, being strategic and smart at the same time.

@Wonderdawg Thanks 😎

@Jamie while I am open to trading vacation hotel nights, I have not been proactive about this. (My wife is very understanding about letting me shoot the hotel room first though ...)

I have been using the Hotel Tonight app to get an $150 to $200 a night - plus tax - in NYC and asking for the courtesy upgrade with a Matterport 3D Showcase in exchange ...

A different, boutique hotel tonight (Thursdsy, 23 July 2015) in NYC. I will let you know if I get an upgrade and add this hotel to this thread.

Got a tip to share about barter, upgrades and other ways you are leveraging your Matterport Pro skills, please post to this thread.

Best,

Dan

Good news ...

Got an upgrade to a King suite AND early check-in ...

1. I used the Hotel Tonight iOS app to book a room at 6:45 am this morning ($170 plus tax). It could have been a twin (very small) bed.

Instead, the manager on duty was so excited about receiving the Matterport 3D Showcase tour to pass on to the corporate eCommerce team, that this was my room (by NYC standards, bid).

Give it a try for your next hotel stay and come back and post your experience to this thread.

Best,

Dan

Did you shoot that at door knob height?

Love it! But same question about the height of camera! Small spaces, lower camera?

@Jamie restaurant trade

@seanminor @cnrfaber

Yes. I break the rule about camera height in tiny hotel rooms for two reasons:

1. Makes the room look bigger
2. Keeps the camera out of the bathroom mirror. (Look at all the mirrors in both examples above. It's nuts, but you will not see the camera.

Two additional techniques if you shoot at 'door knob' height:

1. Still need to shoot at eye-level to make the floor plan and dollhouse look nice: just disable those scans in 3D Workshop.
2. Still shoot in front of all the mirrors because you need 'in between scans' that get deactivated in 3D Workshop.

One note of caution. If you and anticipate converting the 3D to VR, it will be weird walking around at child height.

So, what's the consensus? Anyone like or dislike the 'door knob' height in the above two examples? And why?

Thanks,

Dan

@Jamie Some or all? And, why did you decide on 'door knob' height?

It seems to give the best view of the room.
One thing I didn't think you would need in photography. Knee pads

Just curious...do you give them say a month to have it hosted so they can show their respective team/employers etc?

I did a scan of my kids' preschool at "toddler" height, because I thought it would be cool to tour the property at toddler height. I can't share the Showcase, unfortunately, because there are lots of names and pictures of kids, and even a map of where they live on one wall!

For all my normal scans I set the tripod pretty high, because it made sense to me to do it close to normal human eye height. But now I'm reconsidering. I need to look at some examples, or maybe scan some small spaces at both heights and compare.

Here are a few scans of hotel rooms from a hotel I'm working on (scanned at normal eye height):

I'm going to see if I can go back and redo one of these at "door knob" height.

So, one of the NYC hotel room upgrades in July has turned into a week-long engagement to create 3D Showcases for all their room types.

Here's the first Penthouse I captured. Today (24 August 2015), I captured a second (even bigger) Penthouse that just finished uploading. I am staying in the Penthouse tonight. I my job. 'suite'

@Jamie love it!

Shows what's possible, when a Pro runs the camera.

It is hard work making it look so easy.

At least 1/3 were misaligned as well and several shots had a led flood light on top of the camera. Always fun to try something different. If I had more time I would have added more to the model.

@Jamie I couldnt see the # of scans mentioned in the previous comments but how few scans do you need for a freeby and does that mean no $20 fee or just not count as 1 on your subscription plan.

Thanks!
