How can you scan a home larger than 20,000SF460

Aghachi101 private msg quote post Address this user
Hello Everyone,
I would like to know if you guys have scanned homes larger than 20,000SF. One of my prospective clients has asked if it is possible and if there are any sample homes scanned that I can send to her as a reference.

Your assistance is appreciated.

You can, but you are at the upper limit of the cameras ability.
Once you hit 150+ scans, you may start to run into problems (crashing app mainly)
I would recommend doing each level, and then once you get to a new level, duplicate the scan and continue from there. Worst case you have a backup. If you find it is crashing and you can't fix it, then you can again duplicate and delete previous scans

WOW!

great question, the limit of 150 scans will be more than reached so I recommend breaking it up into levels. Also always duplicate in case of the worst.

The residence I am scheduled to shoot is over 20,000SF - It has allot of detail. I am concerned that the client will not be happy...
Have you or anyone in the group done any residences at this size?

Biggest residence I've done is 10,000 in 1 go.
If you have a newer MP camera you should be ok.
Just keep your scans to a minimum, delete unwanted scans as you go

I haven't done a scan yet, but I would think if you set expectations correctly with your client and explain to them that there is nothing like this, you will do your absolute best, this is an emerging technology so it is continuing to evolve and with patience the end result will be great.
My 2 cents.

Maybe
Because the client is most likely unfamiliar with the technology, they will probably have incorrect expectations.
If explain that the standard limit is around 10,000 Sq ft, but you are prepared to try a bigger size.

Just let them know it may not work as 1 model, and you may need to split it. Better to be upfront than spring it on them

@Aghachi101

This previous Matterport User Group Forum thread is about capturing 25,000 sf spaces.

That thread includes a 16,000 sf model I created with a description of my capture work-flow.

This Forum thread is about ...

Large Commercial/Industrial Scans Greater Than 2,000 sqm

In this thread, I write about why I shot 300+ Scans for this Model + Risks

@GarySnyder I recall that you posted a thread about the latest version of Capture having challenges with 150+ scans. Can you add that thread link to this thread?

Best,

Dan

Hi guys, here are two threads that cover the topics above and bring up issues you should all be aware when shooting large jobs.

https://www.wegetaroundnetwork.com/topic/339/mp-capture-app-kept-crashing-out/

https://www.wegetaroundnetwork.com/topic/316/page/1/camera-refused-to-see-any-additional-scans/

One last comment in regards to shooting a 20,000 SqFt property. If the property is occupied with loads of furniture this could take you far longer to shoot as well as many more scans. You need to make the customer aware that if that is the case you will be on the job for a much longer time.

If the property is empty that is much easier and in some cases you can shot in the door way and a single shot in each room if the room is square.

Best of luck
Gary
