Hi All,

A Member of the Forum writes:

"What are you using to do the 360 YouTube videos?"

Answer:

Ricoh Theta S 360º video/photo camera
Bushman Panoramic Carbon Fiber selfie pole (designed to pair with the Ricoh Theta S)
Manfrotto MT190XPRO4 Tripod (pairs with the Pro mount of the Bushman selfie pole (above)

I also frequently use the following paired with the Ricoh Theta S:

Manfrotto MTPIX-B PIXI Mini-Tripod (When I pair this with the monopod above, I use this to go from the consumer mount on the PIXI to the professional mount on the mono pole
Pentax Ricoh TE-1 Tripod Extender (makes it easier to charge while shooting)
XShot 2.0 Camera Extender (pairs great with the PIXI)

If you have a Samsung phone, many Forum Members that have Samsung phones like pairing the Samsung Gear 360 Camera to create 360º photos and videos.

For other accessories for the:

✓ Samsung Gear 360, click here.

Best,

Dan

P.S. To host 360º photos shot with the Ricoh Theta S like this, I use @dansmigrod/about" target="_blank">Round.Me (I use the paid version).

Great experience in Gear VR. It was like actually being there with lots of different things going on all around.

The VP said they're testing a Daydream version of Matterport that's "more immersive" and lets you use the controller like a "laser pointer." I don't guess they're soliciting beta testers outside of Matterport's staff.

@UserName

Ah! I should actually try that! Thanks for the nudge

I placed the Ricoh Theta S purposely below eye-level. Did you like that in VR (or not)?

As for beta testing, much more likely via RealEstate.com.au or realtor.com ... If you make it happen, please share your experience here ...

Re camera tripod height. Google says you gave us the student's view. That lower elevation made me feel more immersed "in" the action. Google says

"Many VR filmmakers have found that true eye-level actually feels a bit too tall inside an HMD. if you're in a classroom and you want the viewer to feel like she's a student, you'd want to keep the height of the rig at "student" height. If you want that viewer to associate more with the teacher, you'd want to put the cameras at the same height as the teacher."

Maybe the lower camera elevation helped me notice the Daydream the VP was holding. Google seems to becoming an expert at making 360 videos.

Note: If you install the Samsung Internet Browser for Mobile (from the Play Store) and use it to view a YouTube video, you can then put the phone in your Gear VR and the video keeps on playing in the Gear VR's browser. You bypass all the Oculus loading screens and go straight to the video. That's much faster than doing the other way, especially since you don't have to try and search for a video while you're in VR. \

Here's a screenshot I took while wearing the Gear VR.

In VR, we're looking up at him because of the tripod height so that may be what makes you feel more immersed. Also note the play and pause controls. You can pause videos in the Gear VR and jump to any video location using the control bar. You can't do that in Cardboard.

This seems to be a classic use case for VR because even though he's talking, you can't help but look around at all the other activity with people walking by behind you, others snapping photos to the right of you and all sorts of activity. I don't experience any of that when watching the video on a laptop browser screen.
