MLS in my area renting a Matterport camera3494

I would not be so quick to dismiss these businesses. I am sure Blockbuster video thought the same thing when Redbox and Netflix first came to the scene. I am not saying that we all will go out of business because of these rental companies, but I always want to be aware of the 'competition'.
Just sayin'...

@JonJ
I think we're all looking to make sure we don't get calcified in our 360 business the way businesses like Blockbuster and Iheart Radio have done.

5 Lessons Radio Can Learn from Blockbuster

I had to send a camera back to Matterport once and I think the postage was about $85 to ship. We've done the math on what is now out there as another competitor in our field today vs what we offer.

I'll take a leap here and say "We figured businesses like this would emerge after the last few months of discount camera sales. I don't think we knew how they would come in stepping on our toes. But we've had our looking glasses on. Now we're figuring our how to combat the issue on top of many others to stay competitive."

Let's create objection handlers and figure out how to spin their bad's into our positives!

What do you guys have for spin?

I followed Hololens discussions intensely during the early stages. A common topic was "I wonder if I could rent mine to recoup my loses." Maybe a Matterport camera owner has the same idea and will stop renting when he breaks even. End result -- a free camera.

Matterport might make it's rental offer more enticing by crediting some or all of the rental costs towards a camera purchase. During the rental phase Matterport could send the renter free advice, training, tools, marketing tips and limited-time credits on things like hosting fees. Turn a renter into a buyer like a car salesman turns a test driver into a car owner. I'm assuming that Matterport can negotiate camera prices if a lot of its revenue comes from model conversions and hosting fees.

So I've got some info:

The Realtor's Association will be renting the Matterport, an Ipad Air 2, and a Manfrotto tripod for $50 for one shoot. No hosting fee.

And, it gets worse! They just called me to ask me to teach a class on how to use it!

My instinct is to teach the class, with the idea that I can pitch my expertise, let agents know I am available to shoot for them, and maybe (gently) dissuade them from actually using it on their own.

I'm curious how some of you would handle the "opportunity" to teach the class.

Thanks!

It's their way to get more locations scanned.
Wait until a better camera comes out, and see what happens then.

@Rootsyloops

Teach the class:

1. You are the expert. They will "get it" to engage a Pro
2. You can handle scanning when the agent can not
3. They can refer other agents to you that do not want to scan
4. You can handle post production (for a fee)
5. You can offer your additional services too
6. You can provide training for brokerages (for a fee)
7. You will figure-out other ways to make money as the expert

Best,

Dan

What I have found is when a realtor sees how long a scan takes they don't want to spend the time doing it. They would rather do what they do best.
Point out from the beginning how long scans actually take.

At that price, I would rent their equipment for all of my scans. $50 barely covers the processing fee, not to mention ware and tear on the equipment. You should get an assistant and expand your business with their equipment!

@Rootsyloops It sounds like they would not have access to the workshop when they rent from the association so all they are getting is a model. If you do decide to teach them let them know all the extra's you can offer like Mattertags, ability to download all photos, doll house, floor plan photos. Your ability to create the guided tours whether it be slideshow type or walkthrough type. What other service do you offer? Video from Matterport? Floor plans form Blue sketch or Matterport? iPad videos? Do you use they word press plug in that one of the other members offer. Do you offer photography or walkthrough video? Would they know how to trim to give the model a more polished look? Maybe offer hands on training if they actually do decide to rent and really sell at that time how much more you offer. Chances are after a half hour in the home and they have only got through a few rooms they will probably make the decision right there and then it's the last time they want to do that. Maybe they will even pay you at that point to finish the job. LOL

I'm thinking if you do decide to teach depending on how you do the presentation it may actually boost your business. Another way to go about it is to set up another subscription that agents that rent the camera can load models to and offer your model editing services as mentioned above at a certain price.

Think out side of the box on how you could turn this into an opportunity for yourself.

@Rootsyloops One other thing you could do is ask the association to hire you on as an administrator for their workshop. Do they even know who they are going to have to make the models public and send the links to the agents? Not to mention all the other things as mentioned earlier. The association probably hasn't thought this through. One thing for sure is you would have access to people you know are interested in the techknoldgy.
