Dan...Kevin is a little Trumpish on his discussion of time..while I did not use the camera. .I was a supplier and I know there is no way 3000 Sq ft are being done in 30 mins no way...I like the Planitar solution but when Matterport releases 360 exterior..with the dollhouse feature this will be totally superior | ||

This is Alex from Planitar. To back up the statement about speed of data acquisition, here is a more detailed workflow description. The camera's laser scanner acquires the space map while you walk at normal speed. It will also measure while you shoot panos. There are two ways to use the system. One way is to do a walkthrough to build the map concentrating just on that task and then switch to tracking mode where the camera always knows where it is on the map and do a second pass to shoot panos. Or, with more experience, the second way is to combine mapping and shooting into one pass. Here is the time breakdown measured for a 1500sf second floor. The floor has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a hallway. Walkthrough to map the floor: 2-2.5mins. Six panos should be enough to cover all the bedrooms and bathrooms, but can do one more in the hallway. Each pano needs three fisheye images shot in three directions at 120 degrees apart. Each fisheye image takes about 4secs to shoot 3 bracketed exposures and another 4secs to fuse them into a beautiful HDR image which provides for reduced image storage requirements and gives immediate quality feedback. So, each pano is about 30 seconds. Sometimes an agent, owner or their dog will walk in and the shot will be ruined. With manual pano shooting you are always behind the camera and can re-do any shot right away. Throw in some time for walking between the rooms and the second walkthrough comes out to be 6-7mins for the total of about 9mins for that 1500sf floor. When mapping and shooting simultaneously, that can be done even faster. So, 30mins for a 3000sf house is not a dream. Add another 15 mins to shoot high quality still images for print and image gallery with a second camera and that house can be completely serviced in well under an hour. The raw data size for such a house (without gallery images) is about 200MB. At home processing involves automated pano stitching with Planitar software where additional quality control over white balance, exposure and stitching alignment can be done manually and it takes about 10mins per house. Once the data is exported for upload to Planitar for floor plan drafting and iGuide preparation (less than 24 hr turnaround), the upload size is reduced to about 50MB (again, without gallery images). The bottom line is, this technology was created from the ground up for a very high throughput rate with high quality HDR imagery and highly accurate measurements. Alik55, I have a couple of questions for you. First, how does this product handle very large spaces such as shopping malls, large offices, things other than houses? On the flipside, how does it handle very small spaces like boats, RVs, etc? |

Our technology handles larges spaces very well. Below is an example of a 90,000sf office facility that was mapped in 6hrs using 2 cameras. https://youriguide.com/vECJR5Q66V8DD1 Those were IMS-4 cameras - our previous generation that had more limited range and accuracy and thus required more camera positions. With our new IMS-5 camera such a space would have been mapped in 60% of that time probably. Our panoramas are shot using one lens that is rotated around the "nodal" point and thus they have virtually no parallax errors even at 2ft or less distances (also because we calibrate each lens individually). Our lens has 185 deg field of view, so the panos are true 360 by 180 degree. This works especially well for small spaces like bathrooms and tiny bedrooms - unlike the competition, you can look all the way up or down and see the true size of the space. |
