Here's a challenge our client asked us last week ...

A. Why are the whirlpools black in dollhouse view?
B. How would you make the two whirlpools blue in the dollhouse view?

[There is at least one solution ]

Dan

Dan, maybe they can empty them, you can re scan from a different position to capture the darkness with one scan. Then the other scans will show the pools with water. That should do the trick. (I think)

Do they have a cover for them? It will need a solid surface to reflect and capture. Either that or like Carlos said, empty it. Or fill it up with people

You're scanning turbulent water. The detectors don't get a proper return like a solid object. You can see the circulation pump was running. Turn the pump(s) off and wait for the water to become like glass?

Doubt you can mark it as a mirror but it would be something to add to the wish list.

Have scanned indoor pools and spas and unfortunately they'll look crap until we car mark them, pumps on or off, movement, none of that matters...

Hmmm.. That's not good. Summer's coming so evening scans of outdoor pool areas aren't going to be pretty. I was hoping there was a real solution already in place. Crap!!

I did find someone on the forum that was able to do some post editing for models, including filling in pools, you should ask Jamie at Spacescan

@tim

Just curious though - the indoor pool Dan did at the Mandarin Spa turned out pretty good although not perfect. Why did most of the water scan great while other parts didn't? Just trying to wrap my brain around this because in some cases it appears to mostly work.

@CarlosFHdz @Jamie @EscapeVelocity @al9901 @Tim

Drum roll please ...

Like sunlight, the water in the whirlpools absorbs the infrared light. The infrared (IR) mesh is used to create the dollhouse view. Drain the water in the whirlpools - or use a whirlpool water cover - and the IR would create the expected, nice mesh dollhouse view.

Then, disable the scans that do not have water so that they are not viewable when "walking around" in the spa area.

While I had hoped to include an "after", our client decided not to have us date the model.

Got a brain teaser? Post it in this thread.

Best,

Dan

Ok, here's a new Brain Teaser ...

We created this (below) Matterport 3D Showcase on 12 April 2015 so that our client could begin promoting their new Atlanta co-working space here (scroll down).

BUT ...

1. the Reception Desk did not arrive in time for the capture
2. a ton of STUFF was in the Coworking Bar area (see floor plan here); too much to move

SO ...

On Sunday, 12 July 2015, I am scheduled to modify an existing model with a lot of changes to the environment.

What would you do to successfully update the model?

I will publish the updated model in this thread and let you know how I ended up updating the model.

(I have at least one 3D capture scheduled for next week, so it may take until Friday, 16 July to post here.)

Ready? Go!

Best,

Dan

I would say first thing: make sure you match the lighting as exactly as you can. Same time of day, preferably same weather situation, although that is never controllable.
I tried a rescan a few weeks back and had big problems because it was scanned later in the day.

Duplicate and delete the area you need to modify

@Tim Is it the lopsided scan in the cafe on the far wall?

Think Tim had a few beers before scanning

Golden rule of scanning; complete each area in as short a time period as possible. As Julian said, getting anywhere with windows to have the same light and shadows is almost impossible. Better to prepare the area, keep everyone out and do it as fast and methodically as possible.

So far, I have a different technique planned than the ideas you mentioned.

How else might you solve this challenge?

@JulianHowardCT @Jamie ha ha

Plus, for bonus credit, where would you begin scans for the two affected spaces and why?

After Sunday's shoot, I have 3D Captures on Monday and now Tuesday, so I will likely be slow to post exactly how I planned to handle this challenge and the result.

Duplicate the model then start somewhere that not much has changed (close to new scan area) and get a new scan to catch.

Plan out new area you want to scan and see where you are going to finish.

Go to finish and make sure you can get a scan to catch to prevent further alignment issues in mesh.

Scan new area making sure to get new alignment based off of the most recent start or finish marks.

You should end up with 2 layers of scans on top of each other for the affected areas. (the older layer and the new updated layer both)

Duplicate the model.

Delete the older scans underneath leaving just the newer scans, the start and finish scan, and then the points the start and finish scan aligned to in mesh and then upload.

If you have issues go back to master (with all scans) and adjust accordingly.
