Question re Medium or High Density scanning with Pro 3 camera21550

Does scanning in Medium or High Density with a Pro 3 Matterport camera improve the quality of still shots taken from a space?

@denlee

If at all, to a miniscule degree. It slows the rate of rotation and could possibly make the overlap of pano shots slightly more accurate. But the data acquisition (photos) doesn't change by increasing the scan density.

This tool can help you to get alignment in tricky spaces. It also improves cloud density.

Hi @denlee,
The higher density settings has zero effect on the photographic quality of the tour and the still photographs derived from it.
As @Meshimages has said it can help if you are struggling in difficult circumstances.
The higher density increases the number of laser points sent out from about 1.5 million to 3 or 6 million.
Not all of these return, you lose some through scatter.
Higher density means longer scan times.
It can be worthwhile if, for example, you have complex MEP in a high ceiling in a commercial premises.
Generally it is sufficient to do the bulk of the scans at the normal density, with some strategic scans at the higher setting.
In summary the higher density scans are only relevant if you are purchasing the E57 point cloud file with a view to modelling the building in Revit.
The walk through and still photographs are not affected in any way by the higher LiDAR settings.

Hi @ Chemistrydoc,
The still photographs are taken at the very beginning and at the following three points where the Pro3 pauses.
The camera takes five images at different densities to create the High Dynamic Range (HDR) photospheres.
The separate LiDAR unit is quite independent of the camera.

Very helpful information - thank you!

@denlee but the density can also be in increased at the lower setting just scanning more and closer. After teaching forensic scanning for years, high density for open areas yes but some times the lower setting and the extra over lapping scans build the better denser point cloud so if your looking for point clouds the higher setting is not always the best setting. But like others say if you’re looking for just the tour speed is money.
