Hello Everyone - this is what I received from MP this morning - we are a small family business and the new rates will put us out of business - so much for being that 'loyal' MP customer. . .

Hi Rob,

Thank you for being a loyal Matterport customer!

I’m writing to inform you of an important update regarding your Matterport account.

Your current Matterport software plan was discontinued in 2019 and has remained active until now as part of our commitment to supporting our longtime customers. However, to continue providing the best service and experience, we will require an upgrade to our current plans to maintain access because starting in February 2025, we are taking steps to terminate legacy accounts. This transition is something you'll eventually need to make soon.

Moving to an updated plan will also give you access to improved features, more space flexibility, and a range of new tools designed to provide a better user experience.

Let’s schedule a quick call to review your current usage and find the best plan for you. Do you have 15 minutes to connect on it this week?

Best,
Anil

@Distinctive360

Wow... i've not received one of those emails yet and would be frustrated if I did.

At the end of the day its a software business with their main product being SAAS, from a business owner point of view I understand why they'd want to get rid of classic accounts.

how many tours are you hosting on your account? looking at the glass half full, i'd use this as an opportunity to reach out to the clients whos tours i'm hosting and offer to transfer the tour to them at a rate of $$$/tour so they can host it. Alternatively, you could offer them to host it on your account as "Hosting, Support, and Maintenance" for $xx/month, giving them a discount of they do a yearly subscription.

Turn the negative into a positive and collect some residual income.

Thanks Tom - good advice - we have 300 active spaces right now on our 'classic' account - hosting about 150 of those spaces on a yearly basis - so our 'classic' billing is $164/month vs forcing us to go with the 'business' subscription plan which will be $764 month.

@ScanYourSpace I am already about to lose one client because of hosting issues with Matterport and as a builder they are being squeezed for money this year and I have already been told hosting fees are on the bottom or the list and first to go it they go any higher.

@ron0987 I had 1 client paying $200/month for hosting. Their marketing person left and the manager didn't see the reason to continue with the tour so they cancelled... it happens in business. there's always more customers out there.

@ScanYourSpace Yup Totally understand that but for Matterport to give such short notice, it's not like they said hey guys be prepared in 6 months we are changing are our plans so be prepared. You have 30 days to work thru this and thank you for your loyalty and we will show you ours loyalty we will give you 30 days to vacate or pay more that's the issue I have.

I received my email this morning as well. My business model is such that I cannot be paid for hosting. I am in the AEC field. I have been paying them to host and process scans. This will push me back to Leica's software. Its too bad. Some months I pay them $700-$1000 in processing fees. What gets me is the lack of notice. They are just suspending me next month? Not much time for me to pivot. What a disgraceful way to treat a loyal customer of so many years.

If I was an IT guy, I would invent something better than Matterport! They haven't been forthcoming from the beginning and are only after dollars not loyal customers. I'm always looking for a better service. If anyone knows anything better, let me know. I already use I guide and like them very much..

If you have 300 tours which are active and you charge them a annual hosting fee then you can at the very least break even easily

I think this whole thing needs to be looked at…and I’m hoping a third party sees a HUGE opportunity on this hosting thing.

I mean, I pay $15/mo for 2Tb/mo of storage on Dropbox.

Regarding Matterport tours…absolutely NONE of my clients have paid for hosting. I provide hosting for 90 days free…in 3yrs nobody has asked to extend.

People just don’t pay for it…

They love the tour. But after 90 days nobody cares anymore because the deal was made or the plans were created.

Nobody’s willing to pay to keep it alive

So the question will be are you willing to pay more and will your current business model be able to balance the number of models needed to sustain a good business that is what I am trying to to determine.

@rhelling as for another company hosting Matterport I think Matterport locked it up. So I don’t think that will ever happen.

Personally I just don’t like the way they follow thru with doing this. They should higher Tom to do there marketing his presentation was sound and if you would have tied that with a 6 month exit preparation I could have felt a little better.

I am still bitter about my two Pro3 cameras being bad in such a short period of time. I now have no Pro3 and being forced to reopen a Pro account just after I closed it lost all my models. I am scared to buy another Pro3. I still think they have the worst customer service. But I do disagree with Tom on a few things I think they are slow in rolling out new features and they again are lacking in customer input

Hi All,

I sent an email to a Matterport executive this morning asking for a senior management response to this discussion.

I am on day 8 of a virus that won’t let go.

Ann is driving me to the doctor as I write this.

I expect to be back in bed a few more days.

Please do post your thoughts here.

Matterport does read the posts.

@ron0987 I'm not aware of a annual renewal date - the original purchase date could have been February but I will have to check - I have many questions for my Thursday phone call - will keep everyone informed.

Dear Matterport

Whilst we understand that it is imperative for the company to make money, we do not agree with every last dollar being squeezed from the existing base in contradiction to earlier concessions.

This has repeatedly come up and about two years ago we reminded you that during one of the podcasts, it was stated by a C-level exec, that Classic accounts would be honoured for good.

Allow me to remind of this again, as it seems this might have been forgotten along the way.

Case in point was your modest price increase on Classics shortly after, which I presume, was accepted without resistance by the classic user base, and which confirmed that intention of grandfathering the classic account level per se.

To the contrary, this time you are going for the jugular.

E.g., our hosting costs would move from a total of US$580 (AUD 933) to a new Total of: US$1849 x $1.61 AUD = AUD 2977 per month!

I would understand a modest annual inflationary rise, but not a 220% increase and growing.

It wouldn't surprise us if Matterport as part of this "bottom line improver" further intends to "lift" old models with large scan numbers to match the new pricing, meaning large models would move from 1 space count to multiple space counts making the scenario worse still.

Even at reduced annual rates, your move would try to force another A$25K a year from our pocket.

Some of the well meaning comments above entirely miss the point of seeing a "money making opportunity by charging for hosting" as many Classic users I am aware of, have built their earlier business model around the affordability and flexibility of those classic accounts, meaning:

1. Many clients were not charged any hosting
2. Some clients were charged a minimal fee due to their respective business size or model.
3. It allowed for liberal use of hosting slots and reflected in how productions were done

Pulling the rug on this now would cause unacceptable outcomes resulting in a sizeable financial disadvantage.

Additionally, it would take months to work through all clients individually in between day to day work and "eloquently massaging" the newest staff member to get sign-off for this in (since Covid) very transient industries, as in almost all cases, the original contacts are no longer there.

What a nightmare.

We are one of Matterports big supporters, investing countless hours and resources to develop amazing extended visual solutions that further the recognition of the technology and we believe, rug-pulls are an evil side product of the crypto meme-world, not of a professional arrangement like we have (or thought we had) with Matterport.

Whilst we very much dislike unnecessary conflict, we intend to hold Matterport to its promise and after several conversations with colleagues in the field yesterday, there seems no shortage of resolute support for a stand to be made if necessary, as such a move would push several businesses beyond feasibility.

We welcome an official Matterport participation in this transparent conversation.

Well said @schaferu!

Some of my commentary will probably have been covered by others at some point, but I think now more than ever, it's relevant.

Whilst there's a range of other solutions & products that exist in the market, in terms of integration, accessibility, user experience, functionality & overall benefits, it's difficult to find anything else that comes close to offering everything that Matterport currently provides. That's not to say that they are infallable, and of course there may be something else that eventually supercedes them. Personally, I think CoStar should bear this in mind.

For short-term rentals and property sales, hosting is rarely an issue: you either charge them a small amount for a short hosting period, or you offer a recurring monthly hosting fee, by client or model. The Classic plan & to some extent the newer plans, are therefore a good fit for these.

For all other situations, it becomes a bit more complex.

For example, there are a host of MSPs that focus on hospitality, events, retail, arts & culture, where spaces may need hosting in the long term, and often without any need for revisions or additions. This presents a situation where active spaces is incredibly limiting, and counterintuitive to these types of clients & spaces.

I accept that hosting needs to be chargeable. What I find hard to accept is the lack of flexibility on pricing, and the lack of consideration for those with business models different to those that find their success in real estate & construction.

I really hope this recent exchange provides some platform for CoStar or the current board to review & consider their next steps & their structure.
