Great tips, but I would be prepared to lose business for sure depending on how much you raise rates and some of his reasoning is skewed in my opinion when explaining the pros to a client.

I plan on raising my rates next year, 2025, for the first time in 3 years. I probably should have raised them last year to be honest but I didn't. Yes inflation has been killer the past few years. But we're talking 4%, 8%, and 4& last year. I guess if he hasn't raised his rates in a couple years then that makes more sense. However raising your rates 15% in one year as he said he is doing is really high. I've worked on a the other side of things as the marketing director for a Realtor and when our photographer raised his rates, well I talked my employer into swapping photographers immediately. And this was a close friend of hers that she had known for years. As her Marketing Director I couldn't deny he had the best work and provided the best photos compared to the competition. But he lacked on the office side and deadlines. And at the end of the day, photos that are good instead of great, but that are delivered on time and invoiced on time can be just as valued. So if you're going to raise your rates, especially 15%, your current clients better have nothing but praise for you or they will bounce.

As far as telling clients they'll receive better service just because your charging more doesn't add up to me. Are you raising rates because of inflation and higher cost, or because you want to shoot less and give your clients better service? And are you going to actually provide better service? People don't want to pay more with the promise of better service in the future. What is your idea of better service that your higher rates will support? And wait, does this mean you haven't been giving me your best service and attention detail this whole time? These are questions I would ask any photographer raising their rates 15% giving me these answers. Don't forget, any really good agent isn't the one negotiating with their vendors. It's going to be an office manager or marketing director.

I know this sounds like I'm against raising rates, I'm obsoletely not. Like I said, I'm raising my rates beginning January 1st. However, be prepared for tougher questions and having better answers than I'll be able to provide better service and more attention to my clients. I know me personally after years of services going up from streaming services, insurance, to utilities, I am really sensitive to something going up. Now if I feel someone is trying to take advantage of me I will go out of my way to find another provider if possible. I also know once you lose a client it can be quite difficult to win them back if they feal you took advantage of them. But, if you have good answers to more detailed questions, and your clients have no gripes about delivery time or invoicing structure then get your bag.

@Buster6070

What about keeping your existing client pricing and raise rates for all new clients?

For clarification, you can easily offering different pricing to clients using platforms such as:

1. HDPhotoHub
2. RELA
3. Urbanimmersive

Additionally, you could handle with coupon codes with discounts for various clients.

Messaging to existing clients:

1. Thank you for your business. While we have increased our rates to new customers, this coupon code keeps your rates the same.
2. Thank you for referring me to potential clients.

Your thoughts?

Happy New Year,

Dan

@DanSmigrod

That works as well. I really think the inflation reasoning is the best way to go. Everyone can understand that without feeling taken advantage of. My biggest concern was the reasoning of offering better service. That may work with new clients, but I would never suggest to a current client they were receiving nothing but my best from the get go. Great video to consider all in all.
