An associate has here in Japan. It works fine from what I hear. Getting LiDAR scan accuracy combined with 3D Gaussian Splatting is really cool.

I have tried using my Leica's point cloud through Reality Capture and splatting it in Postshot but it always goes weird.

The only thing is, "is accurate point cloud even necessary with 3DGS?". Most of the uses of 3DGS are purely for show, so the accuracy of LiDAR may not be worth the cost.

Would you consider this scanner a potential MP competitor?
From the user perspective, it has to be as easy and crisp as MP Showcase. From the photographer stand point, the processing and hosting need to be fast and cost effective. If 3DGS has a chance to become mainstream, this device seems a good player.

P.S. I wonder why such a price difference with the US ($5300 on this site)

@Tosolini I don’t think this camera is a Matterport competitor as it is not an integrated system. That is not to say that someone will not make one.

However, one important thing to note about most 3DGS software around at the moment is that they are mostly free to use.

I hear that if you are able to use Postshot to create a splat then you can add it as a 3D model to 3D Vista’s current beta edition.

I haven’t tried adding my 3DGS to 3D Vista yet but If anyone has I would love to see it.

We have done a few experiments with 3DGS looking to make them more interactive.

The first prototype was an interactive drum set. Tools used:
- Jawset Postshot for creating the GS (https://www.jawset.com/)
- SuperSplat editor in PlayCanvas for cleaning the GS (https://playcanvas.com/supersplat/editor)
- Spline to create all the interactions (http://spline.com)

The second prototype featured a 3DVista-like platform called http://seekbeak.com. We talked to the developer and he introduced 3DGS support several months back. We then embedded SeekBeak into a third party tool called http://intuiface.com and created a touch screen experience for trade shows.

If you have tried apps like Scaniverse, Polycam or Luma AI, you may agree that scanning a house with a phone is not practical. Having a device that generates a quality 3DGS in a matter of minutes is quite appealing. It may be a matter of time before these viewers become more user friendly and are able to handle large 3DGS.

I reached out to the Seattle representative for XGrids (http://lidaholics.com). He confirmed the $12K price range for the K1 (entry level) + $2K/year subscription for the Studio software. The better models are 2x and 3x the cost of the K1.

You can download some demos and load them in their viewer:

Viewer (Go to Lixel Cybercolor > LCC VIewer)

The end result is quite good. It may be worth renting a unit for a few days and experiment with it. Currently they don't have rental devices, but early next year they will have better availability.

For me there is this certain magic about 3DGS technology.

Similar to the magic impression, that all have experienced about 10 years ago with Matterport

I agree @meshimages. I just feel that at the $12K+ price point, the hardware that makes this magic happen is still a bit too expensive for the current user experience. But with the right use case, it's a great time to be an early adopter.

@Tosolini, @MeshImages, I don’t think this camera is necessary to be proposing the technology to clients. The camera is supposed to improve the accuracy of the point cloud, but I think the magic is in the splat itself.

I made an example and posted it on X. This was completely made with footage from my drone and it was done in less than 2 hours on site. I have to rework the camera positioning so please forgive the funky movement.

@Tosolini Thank you!

We are working on another at the moment of a small castle near Osaka with three drone pilots this time.

It will probably be ready by March.

@Meidansha thanks for sharing, this looks great. But as @Tosolini stated in his earlier post here, you need to run through various software solutions to create an interactive experience.

A good starting point may be the new Scaniverse release which works with mobile phones and lets you explore your scenes on Meta Quest in VR.

Or for drone footage also Polycam maybe in combination with 3DVista (3DGS currently in beta).

@Tosolini @Meidansha - still reflecting on this ... - I came to this conclusion:

The fact, that you have 1) very short capture times, that it is 2) selfhosted, and that you can 3) capture with people around (and erase them in post) makes it a very interesting approach in so many fields, where I could not and never succeed with Matterport.

I suggest the following:
- each of us in this thread should contact their respective local XGrids dealer and get a test drive of the device
- We should then share pros / cons of the experience on this forum
- I'll aim to have my test before end of January, pending availability

Personally, I'm not ready to spend $15K+ in a new device without some hands on research. Also, will there be new hardware announced at Geo Week in February? Anybody going to Denver?
