Matterport Blog Posts

Hi All,

In this Matterport Blog post (16 September 2024), Matterport gives the technical backstory for removing furniture from a Matterport tour (once it launches Project Genesis, expected "soon" ...)

Matterport Blog (16 September 2024) All we want is an empty room: Panorama Inpainting

(Matterport calls furniture removal: Panorama Inpainting)

Your thoughts?

Best,

Dan

@MeshImages

Why "embarrassing"?

@Dan, sorry, embarrassing is wrong. It´s astonishing technology of course!

But we will see how the transitions between panos come out after the removal of the objects. And I am not sure if I will be a fan of such an extensive use of an AI removal feature in reality capture content. I would probably prefer a high-quality AI-rendered image of the empty room. This should not be a problem at all with the property report feature or Apples room plan feature. We will see how it all comes out. If it will be astonishing or maybe embarrassing.

After removing furniture, would most add furniture so that this would be a non issue?

@Dan

But where will new furniture be added? Around the scan positions of the old room setup? Does this make sense?

And who will stage the room? Another AI or shall we manually stage it? If you do this in 3D this is a lot of work - I have just spent a day or two with MPSkins new 3D virtual staging feature where you can set 3D lights in the room to make it look more realistic. Great feature, great look, but this takes time...

So, I think it would be easier to let MP users download the highres panorama of the furnished room and use whatever technology to remove furniture, maybe restage it and re-upload this to the showcase.

Not sure if this Matterport AI development leads to really useful product. But we will see.

I would probably spent my development hours into a good offline player solution (paid) - a new VR showcase player that makes use of the new features - and of course a Cortext AI upgrade with 3D Gaussian Splatting technology to render the 360s and the scandata to a seamless 3D showcase experience like 3DVista and many other platforms are showing it.

@MeshImages

I could imagine that if you are using Matterport to remove furniture, that you may also be using Matterport to do the virtual staging.

Based on watching a video of Matterport Project Genesis, the furniture removal and virtual staging happends instantly.

That said, yes, Matterport should make it easy for Matterport users to download the highest resolution panoramas at no extra charge.

Best,

Dan
