Matterport + Historic Building Restoration & Digital Twin Technology

Matterport Blog (15 April 2024) Historic Building Restoration & Digital Twin Technology: How To Experience The Past In The Present | Modernizing History With Digital Twins

The following "Top 10 Takeaways" is by ChatGPT-4:

Top 10 Takeaways: Historic Building Restoration & Digital Twin Technology

1. Preservation of Historical Integrity: Restoring historic buildings maintains the historical character and integrity of structures, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage and architectural history.

2. Digital Twin Technology: Utilization of Matterport’s Digital Twin technology plays a crucial role in documenting and preserving historic buildings by creating accurate as-built documentation and virtual tours, which are essential for future restorations and educational purposes.

3. Educational Value: Historic buildings serve as practical learning resources for students and professionals in architecture and engineering, demonstrating the durability of traditional craftsmanship and the evolution of building techniques.

4. Record Keeping and Tradition: Digital twins help capture the unique aspects of historic buildings, serving as a digital record of architectural traditions and historical contexts, which is especially valuable when original physical documentation is missing.

5. Safety and Compliance: Digital scanning and the creation of digital twins ensure that restoration projects are safe for workers and compliant with modern building codes, while maintaining the original aesthetics of the buildings.

6. Material Challenges: Matching the original materials used in historic buildings is a significant challenge due to their rarity or total absence in the modern market, necessitating expert knowledge and sometimes, custom solutions.

7. Expertise Necessity: Restoration of historic buildings requires specialized expertise in historical architecture, materials science, and preservation practices to ensure that the restoration respects the building’s original design and materials.

8. Cost Considerations: Although typically more expensive than new construction, the use of digital twin technology can lead to significant cost savings by improving planning accuracy and reducing the need for physical documentation efforts.

9. Long-term Implications: Proper restoration and digital documentation of historic buildings ensure that they can be enjoyed by future generations, adding to the community’s cultural wealth and potentially boosting tourism.

10. Innovative Solutions for Challenges: Advanced technologies like LiDAR and integration with BIM (Building Information Modeling) systems streamline the restoration process, allowing for more efficient project management, accurate measurements, and better collaboration among project teams.

These insights not only underline the importance of preserving historic buildings but also showcase how modern technology can be synergistically used with traditional restoration practices to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of heritage conservation efforts.

We created a scan and fly-through video of the historic Hollywood Legion Theater, just a block south of the Hollywood Bowl. It opened in 1929 as the American Legion Post 43 and it still operates as such. In the basement is an incredible Art Deco bar still used by veteran members, as well as a popular period film location.

The large hall was originally for Legion meetings, USO dances, all sorts of Legion events. About 6 years ago is underwent a massive renovation and is now a 500-seat state-of-the-art movie theater with 35mm, 70mm and digital projection.

Here is a link to a WP3D page that includes both the video and Matterport tour. Don’t miss the bar downstairs. The Matterport includes a Guided Tour that will take you through most of the building.

Here’s another historic theater we’ve helped to promote. It’s vintage 1921, in El Segundo, CA but with something very special.

There was a grand theater palace in Long Beach, CA, 900+ seats, that was set for demolition back in the 1960s. It had a massive Wurlitzer pipe organ used during the silent movie era. A preservationist bought the organ and installed the monster into this tiny theater with less than 100 seats. It’s now used every Saturday and Sunday for vintage movie screenings. The Wurlitzer organ is played live before all screenings and for silent movies, is played live as the films are projected.

This tour is 3DVista and also includes a fly-through video but in this case, the video soundtrack is a recording of that Wurlitzer organ right in the theater, fanfare composed by the live organist specifically for the video. Only thing you can’t get from the video is the physical sensation of sitting in this tiny theater facing hundreds of working organ pipes blasting your eardrums. If you’re ever in LA, don’t miss attending a screening here.
