Matterport Launches Social Impact Program to Help Nonprofits and Public Education Institutions to Create Equitable Access to 3D spaces

Matterport’s Exploration to Equity social impact program aims to increase community inclusion and resilience

SUNNYVALE, California, Tuesday, April 19, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world, today announced the Exploration to Equity program, a new corporate social impact initiative that supports nonprofit organizations to use the Matterport Digital Twin Platform to increase access for underrepresented groups. As part of the program, Matterport will donate its technology and services to select, qualifying organizations such as its first partner organization, Space Foundation Discovery Museum, allowing them to capture and provide people with access to their Matterport 3D spaces. The program will prioritize projects that support marginalized, disenfranchised, and vulnerable populations and focus on capturing historically and socially significant spaces.

Matterport’s mission is to make every building and space more valuable and accessible through the creation of digital twins, or replicas, of those spaces. Among the 4 billion spaces in the world, the Matterport Exploration to Equity program aims to capture some of these spaces for the greater good of society. The Matterport Exploration to Equity program supports creative and innovative organizations that demonstrate equitable solutions to building community resilience through access to spaces. As part of the program, Matterport will evaluate submissions from qualifying US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, K-12 public schools, and public universities to bring historically or socially significant spaces to life through the Matterport Digital Twin Platform, allowing anyone, anywhere to visit.

The first organization to benefit from the new program is the Space Foundation Discovery Museum, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. An interactive, education-focused destination, the Space Foundation Discovery Museum is Colorado’s first and only dedicated space, science, and technology museum. A popular field trip destination for school children, Matterport donated services to capture a digital twin of the museum to create a new immersive, virtual experience to help power remote learning opportunities for students beyond their immediate region. Thank you for sharing Dan.

As an MSP that services Arts and Cultural Institutions to include Colleges and Universities I commend Matterport for launching their new Social Impact program. The Discovery Museum Digital Twin looks great!

However, if there is one thing you can count on Matterport to do is keep MSP's on their toes and constantly pivoting and innovating just to stay in relevant and in business. Sometimes it feels like Matterport is our biggest competitor.

The fact that Matterport will donate its technology and services to select, qualifying organizations on the surface makes my studios value proposition to our Heritage and Education clients much less compelling if not useless.

Do you service Arts and Cultural Institutions or the Education sector? What are your thoughts about this new initiative?

Yes. I agree with you.

Matterport's announcement (above) might actually reduce the number of non-profits that get Matterport tours because:

1. Matterport Service Provides stop pitching non-profits
2. Non-Profits "hold out" until if/when they can get approval by Matterport

Matterport could make this win-win-win by having non-profits go through MSPs for the application process and that the amount be a grant of a fix amount say $1,000, $2,500 or $5,000 - paid to the MSP - to have a local MSP create the the tour.

Then:

1. Matterport Service Provides would have an incentive to pitch non-profits
2. Non-Profits would still move forward with their local MSP and the monies paid to the MSP

Ideally, Matterport makes the grant available to any non-profit that gets a Matterport tour done.

@DanSmigrod WAY to logical to do that, I see that as a win, win. I very seldom see MP jumping on that bandwagon. It would be great to get a Pro to do the space with little to no headache for curator. I do not see MP process these requests any faster than the requests made for information to Matterport Service Providers. So in the long run great idea, but I have pitched this to several Non Profit's and doing it for free as a teaser to get people in as long as I can post it on my webpage and we get no takers. But in the long run if MP produced a paying port that allow access by paying people I think it would take off. Just because they are non profit, does not mean they can't charge for the viewing.
