In this 3D Mapping The Exploratorium with Matterport! video by Test.com, Matterport Co-Founder Matt Bell explains the magic about how the Camera captures three-dimensional data using structured light. It's a great explanation of the three depth sensors and three color sensors in the Matterport Camera. The Camera "captures around 10 million 3D points per second and it's 'madly' stitching all of those together as it turns around," says Matt in this video interview. "Once it has that full 360-degree plus depth image - that puzzle piece - it sends that over to the iPad. And, as the iPad receives puzzle piece after puzzle piece as you move this camera around from spot to spot, you'll see the stitching happen on the iPad. And, it's a quick and dirty preview: enough that you know that everything is aligned properly and that you have captured the whole space." [Processing in the cloud is the high quality version] Props to Tested.com Editor Norm Chan for asking great, interesting questions and helping provide (thoughtful) context for those questions. Since this video was publishes yesterday (4 April 2016), it has been viewed 50,000 times. Let's hope that generates more business for Matterport service providers ... Thanks to @Tosolini for calling my attention to this video. Best, Dan Exploratorim, San Francisco, CA |

Thank you Dan! This could serve as a quick talk for a techie type gathering using the two resources in a limited 20 minute gathering. I shudder at the one geek in the audience that throws a wrench in the presentation:-) In a high school / community college / art school environment, I think this would be awesome. Thanks again for sharing! | ||

Hi All, Great vid. But this is what i think is a bid odd, At about 4 mins in to the video we see the MP cam used on a tripot with a video pan and tilt head. It doesn't realy matter what you use to put your cam on a tripot but MP doesn't follow its own advice here. A other thing is, when they show the result of the first scan they talk about the black spots. To fill in those you simply move the cam 10 feet or so to fill in those blind spots. In my experience 5 feet is the max between two scans. And in a soace like that you need to scan around every corner of a desk or cabinet to clear all the black spots. Its impossible to get a good scanned space by only replacing the cam to 4 different places. Ones they start talking about Google the MP rep quickly moves on not realy answering the question. There are also a couple of other options mentioned in the vid that are not realy correct. You will find those if you take a more critical look at the vid. Still a great vid. Grtz Rene. |
