Matterporting all Commercial/Military Ships Around the Globe?

Hi All,

I read this article earlier today (5 May 2021):

INQUIRER.net (5 May 2021) Pandemic pushes Philippine Navy maintenance training to virtual reality

At first glance of the headline, I am thinking, "Oh! That (should be) Matterport!: a digital twin - including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) - of EVERY commercial/military ship around the globe!"

Matterport digital twins of commercial/military ships (seems like it) makes sense:

✓ virtual training
✓ remote maintenance monitoring
✓ remote pre-prep for repairs and maintenance
✓ virtual tours by stakeholders
✓ fleet management
✓ “This is just the start, the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of possible things that we could do with this kind of technology,” [said Philippine Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NSSTC) superintendent Commander Marcus Jason Bartolome in this news article.]

But ...

Here are some of the things that Matterport would likely need to do before commercial/military ships move forward with immersive Matterport digital twins [including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)]:

1. offer a capture solution that is faster than moving a tripod (drone? Trolley? Robot? Backpack?)
2. be scalable for the size of ships
3. processing and hosting on the client's servers (to avoid privacy and security concerns)
4. offer in-tour video chat (While there are services such as AgentRelay that do this, it's likely Matterport would need to offer this in-Matterport experience for tours NOT hosted in the Matterport Cloud.)
5. offer in-tour Augmented Reality (AR) - While there are services such as CAPTUR3D that do this, it's likely Matterport would need to offer this in-Matterport experience for tours NOT hosted in the Matterport Cloud.)

I could imagine other Matterport-like platforms will be faster to accommodate digital twins of commercial/military ships around the globe: a 3D platform - or software - that includes automating tour creation (and likely) using non-proprietary platform specific 3D/360 cameras.

What are your thoughts? Are these markets - commercial and military ships - large enough for Matterport to address these likely concerns?

Best,

Dan

@DanSmigrod was an interesting article.

But lets address the elephant in the room and why Matterport will never work.

1. NO SELF HOSTING
- These agencies, governments etc data is too sensitive to sit on a AWS server with a password. Dont care if you have Israeli password protection can be hacked.

- we are currently working with a government, and Matterport was not the fit for them , as there is way too many restriction with the technology for them. No secure API integrations, so we develop a solution for them .

2. Matterport is limited to the number of scanning points.

3. Cant edit the panos ( only with SDK , or pay very high amounts to 3rd parties to do this )

4. Cameras has too many limitations , image quality is bad, broken artifacts , outdoor capture , workflow too long and is not easy to use. Aka business in a box

5. Their VR experience is average compared to what is currently on the market for real spaces
