Extracting Rectilinear Images from panoramic1227

Jamie private msg quote post Address this user
Hi guys

An off matterport(ish) topic.
Does anyone have experience extracting standard images from panoramic shots?
I've can do it in ptgui, but it's a lengthy process.
Also I've tried the panorama tool plugin for photoshop with not very good result.

@Jamie

Would Pano2VR solve the puzzle? I stopped using PT Gui Pro and Pano2VR the day I did my first Matterport scan.

@Bill

This is a great question for you :ccol: ...

Jamie,

Disclaimer: I am still somewhat of a novice at panos myself, but do you have Pano2VR?

After stitching a dozen bracketed photos in PTGui to create an equirectangular [eqr] image, I next sharpen it and such in Photoshop.

Then I use Pano2VR with Photoshop to patch my logo at the bottom of the equirectangular panorama.

Next, I take the resulting equirectangular image back into Photoshop to to crop a horizontal [hrz] slice (often removing the more severely stretched top and bottom areas) for a digi-flat alternative view.

Then I sometimes create additional images in Pano2VR as well ... images are cut like a rectangle clipped from any area of the sphere ... a default view [dfl] is sometimes used for creating Apple widgets [wdgt] when placing fully-spherical panos into Apple's iBook Author primarily for the iPad (1024 x 768 px) ... mirror ball view [mrb] and tunnel view [tnl] or little tiny planet [ltp] and such ... These odd perspective are done at rare times for fun, as people might use them on social media with a link to the fully-spherical version.

You can control the portion of the sphere used in a rectangle window cropped/created from the equirectangular image.

An added note: I label the filename with those 3-letter abbreviations [shown in the brackets] at the end of the filename before the .jpg, .png, etcetera. It makes it less confusing to know which was what later on by just the filenames

Best regards,
Tim Oldfield

Dan,

I very much look forward to obtaining a Matterport camera this year to simplify those convoluted time-consuming processes too.

In the interim, I'll learn everything I can in advance here on your forum. Wonderful information here.

Thank You all!
:-)

@Jamie @WashingtonState360

An example of my 360º spherical photography. My guess is that you will appreciate the stitching. I recall that I used 40 shots to create this one

Dan

P.S. And an event and my 360º selfie

Thanks for the info guys. It's a little quicker than ptgui extraction with pano2vr. Appreciate the information.

Tim, I'm just across the border from you. Let me know when you get your camera, glad to help out if you need any assistance

@dan
wow, impressive stitching Dan. And you only ended up with 1 person looking at the camera. That looks like a fun shoot

Just wanted to chime in here that Pano2VR holds such a special place in my heart for years of use after painstakingly working with HDR fisheye images, merging with PTGui, then making a marvelous tour with Pano2VR.

It's lovely to hear it mentioned here. And I'm once again thrilled to be liberated from having to spend hours using it -- love Matterport

Yes. I feel the same way. I stopped cold turkey as soon as I received the Camera.

The good news is that any of us that have used PT Gui Pro and Pano2VR actually appreciates what the MP platform does and how to solve challenges like not having a railing look weird that is close to the camera (by how we position the camera for the stitching).

All that said, I wish we could use PT Gui Pro and Pano2VR to "clean up" the MP images and add our own content in the zenith and nadir.

Sometimes we have to let go to move forward.
