Hello,

Just wondering has anyone here ever tried viewing showcases with Samsung Gear VR 2? Tried it last week but the browser didn't work....

Thanks!

I assume you mean with the Samsung Gear VR internet browser, if so, I don´t think it´s supported. You need the Matterport app from the oculus store, and then get the showcase converted for VR ($500).

Yup, Matterport manually creates the VR version, last I saw on the forum you can expect 4-6 weeks delivery time. It´s rubbish both with regards to turn around time and price.

I read on Tech Crunch that Best Buy was giving away Gear VRs for free with the purchase of a new phone. I ended up with a new Note 5 and the Gear VR!

First Impressions:

(1) The experience was akin to using a 1998 iMac for the first time. It's great but it's not hard to imagine how it will be way better in the future.

(2) The Matterport Tours that you can download took about 5 minutes each to download onto my phone. There's no buffering between scans which is great!

(3) It actually made me really sick which is something I wasn't expecting. I have no problems with motion sickness or sea sickness but I seriously felt ill after about 15 minutes with the thing on.

(4) It's pretty dorky. Still trying to figure out if this will really catch on and go mainstream or if it will remain gimicky for a long time.

I did a VR conversion just to have it in my portfolio. The turn-around time was long, and the cost is high, but I think it's because from what I understand they have to do a lot of stuff manually. When they can find a way to automate the process it should shorten the wait time and bring costs down.

That said, I certainly won't shy away from adding VR options to clients if they want. I'd just make sure there was a premium on the cost to cover the $500 conversion.

Personally I don't see VR fitting in to real estate marketing as the costs would be too high for agents to bear. However, for businesses that want to showcase their business space to people in other physical locations it could be perfect. If they have to pay $2000+ for someone to scan the place, convert the tour and allow them to put it on a device (another $1,000 or so for phone device and VR Gear), I can see that being affordable for certain types of establishments (e.g., resorts, casinos, etc.)

What does the resolution feel like when using the the gear? Is it grainy at all to the eye?

@smcclell It's not crystal clear.. that's for sure. It'd be nice if the resolution was better, but it's not horrible.

If you upload your OBJ file to SketchFab.com, you can view it in 3D using Google Cardboard.

Now I realize that it's not ideal as there is no way within SketchFab.com to control if one wanders through a wall -- and it's the 3D Model, not the photographic model.

However, due to the novelty of viewing Matterport Tours in 3D, I could see a potential use.

I uploaded this:

Someone else uploaded this, and it works incredibly well - especially due to the shape of the home
