Video: Camera Class Comparison | Video courtesy of Matterport YouTube Channel | 19 May 2020

Hi All,

Matterport Content Marketing Manager Amir Frank discusses the difference between the various cameras used to create a Matterport digital twin (video above):

✓ Matterport Pro2 3D Camera
✓ Leica BLK360
✓ 360 Cameras (Ricoh Theta Z1 / Ricoh Theta V / Insta360 One X
Matterport Capture iOS App (Beta)

Your thoughts?

Dan

Transcript (Video above)

- [Instructor] The Matterport platform is currently supported by four camera classes, the Matterport Pro2, Leica BLK360, 360 Cameras, and most recently the iPhone and iPad.

The Matterport Pro2 Camera is a True 3D camera and the gold standard for 3D capture.

It's perfect from simple residential to large and complex commercial spaces. No camera captures as much detail with the speed of the Pro2 while delivering exceptional dimensional accuracy and stunning image quality.

The Leica BLK360 is also a True 3D camera and designed for professionals in architecture, engineering, and related industries where dimensional accuracy is critical. The BLK360 has the highest measurement accuracy.

But despite its unrivaled measurement accuracy, the 360 panos produced will not have the clarity and color quality of the Pro2.

The 360 Camera class is perfect for capturing smaller spaces such as rooms and apartments where the highest measurement accuracy is not required since these are not True 3D cameras. Because these cameras capture the entire 360 sphere in a single shot, they are, however, the fastest camera class.

The iPhone and iPad are great for quick and easy scans of smaller spaces as those devices are always with you. However, just like the 360 Cameras, iOS devices are not True 3D.

We recommend using your iOS device to easily scan a space and share it with your family, friends, and colleagues. To learn more about Matterport supported devices visit matterport.com/cameras

Dan,

Curious here as to why you have the BLK at 34 Megapixel when Leica and Matterport both say it has 150 Megapixel spherical image generation.

@dave3d

Thank you for joining the WGAN Forum. Welcome!

Great question. The chart (above) is a Matterport provided document.

What is your experience using BLK360 + Matterport regarding megapixels?

Agree this is a bit misleading as it's not differentiating standard photo resolution, from the Pro2's equirectangular coverage, from the BLK's spherical coverage. If you export the imagery off each to create traditional 2D photos, the table is correctly portraying the relative quality you get from each (though I find BLK imagery exported max resolution comes out the same resolution as the Z1). It would be possibly more useful for them to present the the max pixel pixel resolution you can get from each camera, which would still show Matterport Pro2 as the best.

Just a follow up observation - I was actually relieved to see Matterport issuing this a few weeks back. They have been so 'iPhone' recently, coupled with their Support/resourcing issues and the fading of the MSP programme, that those who operate with the higher end equipment and provide 3D services to others have been getting very, very nervous about where Matterport is heading.

I recall seeing a note a while back (can't remember where - email I think) that Matterport were going to begin repositioning the range of capabilities to highlight there's options at all budget levels, and that the Pro2 (and BLK) would be clearly positioned as the 'gold standard' as they have above. We want Matterport to do this, as it supports our approach to market to say if you want better, we can provide better without you investing in the equipment or learning how to best use it. But I guess they don't want to do this while launching iPhone as it would straight away highlight the new thing, is the lowest quality thing.

So - a step in the right direction by Matterport I think, but I'd love to see a bit more positioning along these lines.
