Matterport Capture App + Tripod + Rotator + Capture Automation: Up Next?

Hi All,

Missing from today's (4 May 2020) launch of Matterport Capture App paired (just) with an iPhone (or iPad) is was the use of a tripod plus rotator and automation applied to the Capture process (as Matterport does now with the rotation of the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera).

I could imagine that's coming soon.

Why?

As GeoCV, Nodalview, theVRkit and other examples demonstrate, it's actually possible to create an equality to or better quality 360 photo sphere than with the present generation of 360 1-click cameras (such as the Ricoh Theta Z1, Ricoh Theta V and Insta360 One X).

While the workflow of capture with a rotator takes longer than a 360º 1-click camera, for those just starting out with Matterport - that do not want to invest in a 360º camera (or Matterport Pro2 3D Camera), the Matterport Capture App + Tripod + Rotator + Capture Automation is both:

✓ a cost effective solution (versus a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera)
✓ a good or better quality option (versus the present generation of Matterport compatible 360º 1-click cameras) (See Three 360º Cameras Matterport Should Integrate with Matterport Capture App | 25 Sept. 2019)

So, why no mention of the Matterport Capture App + Tripod + Rotator + Capture Automation on the Matterport website or in the eBlast today (4 May 2020) from Matterport CEO RJ Pittman? If you knew that this solution was coming, would you buy a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera?

My suggestion is that if you are planning to buy a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera, see if you can get Matterport to put in writing that if Matterport come out with the following within three months of your purpose, they will agree to allow you to return the camera:

✓ Matterport Capture App + Tripod + Rotator + Capture Automation: Up Next?

I could imagine that Matterport will NOT give you this return guarantee in writing. And, I am not suggesting that you hold off your Matterport Pro2 3D Camera purchase, if:

✓ your ROI on the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera purchase justifies the purchase today
✓ you need (likely) the best Matterport capture solution "gold standard for 3D capture"
✓ you will miss opportunities holding off purchasing the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera
✓ you are scanning more than just rooms or a small space

Matterport CEO RJ Pittman writes in an eBlast today (4 May 2020):

"The [Matterport] Pro2 [3D] Camera is the gold standard for 3D capture with exceptional dimensional accuracy and stunning image quality for all types of spaces, from small to very large. 360 cameras are perfect for capturing smaller spaces where the highest accuracy isn't required. Matterport for iPhone is a great choice to scan a room, or a small space, with just the phone in your pocket."

Do you think up next is Matterport Capture App + Tripod + Rotator + Capture Automation (of the Capture process)? If so, what are your thoughts?

Best,

Dan

The rotator might be a bit more challenging (but not impossible) because the operator would need to trigger the start of the scan from the iOS device and then try to get out of the 360 shot in time. With a Pro2, you can initiate a scan from behind a wall.

@Garnetwest

Actually, with the (proposed, likely) Capture automation, you would be behind the camera (imagine there is a timer set to 3 seconds so that you can tap and move behind the camera rotating).

Yes, that's what I imagined. However running out of the shot to escape a 3-5 second delay timer will lead to camera operators being inadvertently caught in the shot. Additionally, longer delay times will increase overall scan times. Also now that both the camera AND the Capture program are going to be attached to the rotator...viewing alignments, scan previews and marking windows/mirrors, etc also become more challenging. Not impossible to accomplish, but certainly not the most feasible workflow.
Will the mass market opt for this slight inconvenience and inferior image quality vs. paying a professional to handle the job with top-notch results?? Probably! Unfortunately the "good enough" attitude that many people take (especially in these uncertain times), will carve enough out of the industry for us to feel the pinch. While some may still opt for a "professional" to do the work, the perceived value of the work will be greatly diminished, now that "anybody" can do it.

You would simply stand behind the iPhone as you do now with the Matterport camera.
