Hello everyone,

James Aguilar here from Central Florida. Realtor for 25 years and Matterport Photographer for 4 years.

Im having issues scanning a gym of a school. It's not always aligning by the time I get to half court, any ideas where to start and end? I tried from one corner going all the way around but the picture does not align at the end.

If ever I will experience the maximum number of scans, the question is, what is the maximum number? If someone scanned a school, or anything large, could you kindly share the link?

I appreciate anyone advice and assistance.

By the way, thanks again to Lord Dan for this awesome forum.

Are you saying you have failed scans??? Due to no alignment???

Or are you saying that what you are seeing on your iPad isn't what the actual space looks like??

The max number depends on your ipad

@FloridaProperties

I had the same problem. I was not to complete the gym.

Here’s what I tried:

1. Lowered camera
2. Scanned closer together

What I did not try:

1. Placing objects on the floor to help with common points for stitching such as basketballs or chairs
2. Using targets on walls

@FloridaProperties

Because I did not believe I would be successful, I let the client know upfront and requested a test shoot

Large open spaces can be tricky

@lilnitsch I like the way you did the scanning. I also did two basketball Courts at a Schoo with an indoor pool. And the model started to dog leg on the one side. It was a total nightmare to shoot it. I started by first doing the outer walls and then ran to the centre areas. But the way you did it looks much better, just an awful lot of scans. My total model was over 1400 scans.

1400 Scans? I think the most I did was 200. Glad to know I can do the whole school without uploading issues. My Ipad air has 80GB left out of 128GB, is that sufficient enough?

@FloridaProperties

I tried that too. Unfortunately, I was NOT successful. The court was VERY SHINEY (which, I believe, also accounted for my failure).

Pleas share with us your experience trying this ...

Good luck!

Thank you for all your comments.

Did anyone scan a school with a indoor basketball court. Just wondering how the dollhouse would look like. If someone did 1400 scans, I think I will be reaching this. There's a church connected to the school, I may even scan the church too. Any problems uploading it?

Curios, if I have 90GB left on my Ipad air, can I do 2000 scans - 1 property with it?

I like to see someone share the biggest 3D scan job ever. PLEASE

Can you share the scan?

@FloridaProperties

BTY, why not just one photo of the entire court?

My intended use of scanning the entire basketball court was then to insert, staged setups of basketball players within the space. I wanted to shoot the court ahead of time, so that I could do these people setups without having them wait for me to scan between our vignettes.

@FloridaProperties

I simply took my time and paid close attention to where capture was laying down the scan positions

I've done a very large (80k sf) open same/samey space. Was very difficult.
Here is a portion... American Muscle car Museum

If I were to try a basketball court, I would definitely scan the entire perimeter first. I think I would then go round again (maybe twice) while working either side of the in-bounds lines. Then I'd work the foul lanes, and radian out to the boundary again. Try the mid court area next? The stripes should help quite a bit I think.

@FloridaProperties The model got stitched by Super Dee for me. My iPad started crashing. So had to break up the model into three floors, and then had 22 class room stitched into that model. Was a nightmare, will never do it again. Maybe if I get a BLK to help with the hallways scan that can help with reducing the number of scans.

Also the model is very heavy when landing, it works but it was a beast.

I actually did that, by the time I was end of the rectangle, it did not align.

I believe I was scanning about every 4 to 6 feet then hid additional scan positions in post

Yeah, we learned the hard way that once it starts to go "sideways" you're screwed. You have to watch every scan's location to make sure it is correct, if it is not, delete and double back. And yeah, I had to go as close as 2 feet in some instances.
