| @DanSmigrod posted a while back about scanning in a cold environment. (The thread has been archived, so I can't post to it.) At the time, a few people reported scanning in fairly cold (~20 degrees F) with no issues, despite Matterport specs saying the camera is at its best over 50 degrees F. I'm planning to try to do a HUGE scan in a very cold enviroment. About 13,000 sq feet at 9 degrees F. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of getting some of those chemical heating pads for the camera to help keep it warm. The good news is that it's all indoors so sunlight won't be an issue. If I can get it to work, I'm a shoe in to win that Matterport contest for best holiday themed scan... Craig |

| Have you thought about wrapping some foam or insulation around it? I've done -8c 17f and it worked ok, can't say I did though  |

| @craigsauer Exciting! Can you rotate three or more cameras among warm and cold? When the cold camera fails to scan, there is always one warm and one getting warm. Get a santa's helper  Perhaps if it is an exciting enough space, MP would loan you cameras? Happy holidays, Dan |

| If you need to go from a cold area and inside a warm room for the camera to heat up, I´d be worried about condensation on the lenses/inside the electronics. As a Norwegian photographer I`ve had this happen and the condensation will leave traces on the lens/sensor even after drying up. Also, the cold will affect your iPad battery a lot, so probably get a big puff jacket on, with an external battery and try to keep your iPad inside the jacket. Probably insulate with styrofoam, adding some heating pads on the outside and making some holes for the fan. IDK mate, sounds a bit risky... But cool |

| So I managed to complete the scan. It was a bit of an adventure, but the camera had no problems at all with the temperature. I got an email back from Tim T at Matterport saying that the cold shouldn't be a big problem, just that one of the sensors doesn't work optimally below 50 degree Fahrenheit. I kept the camera in the cold for about 5 hours, and had relatively few scans that wouldn't sync with the others. Unfortunately the end result was not quite as good as I'd hoped. Something about the lighting and the fog from the sublimating ice make for a pretty crappy image a lot of the time. The dollhouse is a mess, so I disabled it. http://3dinteriorscanning.com/3d-model/httpsmy-matterport-comshowm8suu74yj5qs/skinned/ I don't think it will work as promotional material for the Queen Mary, unfortunately, but I think it should be interesting to this group as an example of an extreme environment. In order to survive 5 hours (mostly) inside a 9 degree F environment, I wore wool socks, jeans, sweatpants, 3 shirts, 3 jackets, special 2-layer gloves with an iPad compatible finger pad, and a warm hat. A couple of quirks to point out: 1. I was able to scan going down the ice slide. If you look down from one of the scan points, you can see my feet and head under the tripod as I tried to stay still on the ice slide. 2. The ghost of Christmas future turned out to be quite a problem. It flaps around like crazy in the wind from the air management system inside the Ice Kingdom, and there was no way to turn off the fans temporarily. I ended up attaching some curtain clips to the bottom of its robes to hold them reasonably still to get the scans to take. 3. For reasons that are unclear to me, I was unable to scan the areas to the extreme left and right of the ice slide. There are hallways leading down to an ice tunnel that runs beneath the platform for the ice slides, and I would have liked to have been able to scan it. I have no idea why I wasn't able to get those areas to scan, but both sides just wouldn't work at all. Craig |

Sooo - you´re telling me you wore Norwegian summer attire  hah. I guess it´s a nice showcase for the creators, too bad the dollhouse didn´t work out well though. anyway - great work with making it happen |
