Here is the backstory:

We are a french start-up https://inmaps.fr/ specialized in 3D interactive virtual tours for large companies.

With its 200 km of automatic lines, as much as the current french metro, and 68 stations: the Grand Paris Express is the largest urban project in Europe (more info here)

Société du Grand Paris, in charge of the implementation of the Grand Paris Express, asked us to make the captures of their main projects, allowing everyone to discover the other side of the palisades of the construction site.

The first modeled construction site that Dan invited you to discover is a huge area with a part immersed in the tunnel boring machine and a part of it emerged on the construction site.

The technical challenge for us was to capture the whole site for one day because it was the only opportunity to have an empty site and here is the secret recipe we use:
Ingredients:

- 1 camera Insta360 One X with an extensible boom to realize the video teaser
- 1 Matterport Pro2 3D Camera for underground capture
- 1 Leica BLK 360 camera for outdoor capture
- 1 iPad with Matterport Capture app
- 1 iPhone with Matterport capture application
- 2 people to capture

Preparation:

- We have identified with our client the entire visit and define the desired path that we have represent on a map and we made estimation with the distance of the number of points and the duration of each stage of the capture.

Capture:

Our strategy was to secure outdoor spaces and we started two models in parallel

- 1 person made the capture with the BLK 360 outside going down the stairs until the entrance of the TBM
- 1 other person start capturing the TBM with the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera

Once we have finish, we realized the video teaser on the whole course with the camera insta360 One X. As the tunnel measured 1 km we used a bike to browse it and then we worked it in the iPad application insta360

Post Production:

- In order to avoid the efforts of stairways we have to duplicate the outside model in 2 and keep a visit for the outside and a visit for the entrance of the tunnel boring machine and a last with the inside of the tunnel boring machine. We used different color tags to link the different visits.

- We then gave him the visit to position
- We sent our client before the capture a table allowing him to specify all the resources videos / photos / texts they wanted to appear in the visit

Feedback:

- The Société du Grand Paris was able to benefit from a wide promotion campaign through its site and the various social and media networks to achieve a real buzz around the tunnel boring machines and they were very satisfied with the impact obtained

- The technical evolution for the next sites capture: we found Leica BLK360's camera very slow for the recordings with ultimately a resolution that was not up to what we hope.

For the next outdoor sites we will rather use the Panono camera and the Cupix capture studio that I discovered through this fantastic We Get Around Network Forum and all the invaluable advices from Dan.
