Yesterday I looked for a nice industrial place in South Seattle that would be appropriate for a new tech experiment. This test demonstrates how you can use your iPhone to capture reality in 3D and display it in #AR.

First, I used Google Street View to identify an interesting location for this test. Then I drove on site and used the Display.Land app by http://ubiquity6.com to 3D scan the area. This app uses a technique called photogrammetry to reconstruct the 3D model from your phone camera. Once processed, I downloaded the raw OBJ data file and uploaded it to Dropbox. I launched the http://torch.app, imported the model in AR, and positioned it over my desk.

P.S. The model in this video has not been cleaned up or optimized in any way.

So you used Ubiquity6 to capture the space and the Torch app to show the space?

@3DVirtuallyThere Correct. I used Ubiquity6 to create the 3D model via photogrammetry. It took some time to process it in their cloud. Then I downloaded it (via desktop as this feature is not mobilized yet). I should have cleaned up the model at this point, but my goal was to import it in Torch as is, via Dropbox.

Here is how the model looks like in Ubiquity6 once I cropped it

@Tosolini

Did I see some good used Michelin tires in the stack that you could get good money for?

Did it a take long to capture the space. It actually looks pretty decent.

@3DVirtuallyThere I did multiple scans and each took around 5 mins. Then I selected the best one. I'm still learning the right capturing techniques, as my MP 360 mindset collides with the best practices in photogrammetry.

@leonherbert I used an iPhone 11 Pro. As you seem to have some previous experience with this technique, feel free to share your thoughts.

@DanSmigrod I missed an opportunity to monetize those old Michelin :-)

@garysnyder I’ve a lot of confidence in the future of our phones. As per new experiments, give me some time as I still have some ideas to explore :-)
