How would you price an 80,700 SQ FT (20-Exhibits/hallways) Museum?18478

Cabrahams private msg quote post Address this user
I rarely post on here anymore because to be honest my Matterport business has pretty much gone away. I do get some of these RFP's a few times a year, however, and in this case could use some help giving a quote.

Boiling it down, basically...It includes 20 exhibits and hallways (in a museum), for a total of 80,700 square feet.

How would you price this out realistically?

Thank you SO much in advance for your help. I feel pretty blind on this one.

This will vary a bit depending on how you may monetize your services. Large projects like this I typically will go to a day rate. Then for the upkeep of the model I'd offer them the ability to get their own account in which I could transfer it to or offer to host it for a fee that would be at least equal to the starter account

Suggestions on what you would price for a day rate for something like this? I have the Pro 2, not the 3. In my experience there's no way the battery in that would last for that amount of square footage, although on a tripod and dolly it could speed things up. Thinking two days, or really more like 1 1/2 days?

I would schedule a time to go there in person to make a quote. Make sure you can connect everything comfortably or need 2 stories that can or cannot connect due to elevator. As you walk the property you will feel what your time may take. Seeing how far you can leap between space or feel cramped. Filling in shots for other spaces of heavy black for dollhouse. Shows some due diligence, repour and credibility on your end.

We used to all think that $0.03 a square a foot Matterport was offering was killing our demands for $0.08 - $0.10 for others. How much hosting do you want to handle? Your competition may charge low up front and stick them with $30/month hosting fee immediately.

What is your day rate looking like? You may be able to shoot this in about 8-10 hours. Charging the $0.03 a square foot with free hosting for a year would land you $2,400. Then prep them for the cost if you ever decide to dump Matterport on your end and have them host themselves.

My current day rate is about $1,500 if in my service area. Outside of the service area I'd calculate mileage & accommodation if need be

I would suggest they take on the hosting which I don't think they would have an issue with. They had also written:

We would take on the editing/creating the tour and add animation. Not really sure what animation they're referring to at this point.

$2,400 seems a bit low to be honest but maybe I just charge more? I'm in Boston. I realize pricing is different around the country.

@Cabrahams

Make your Matterport competition irrelevant by adding an overlay. For example:

CAPTUR3D so that you can add:

1. "video walls" (without MatterTags)
2. location based audio as the guest "steps" in front of the exhibit

SuperViz to enable the museum to do guided virtual tours with school groups and around the world

Openhaus or SIMLAB overlays to integrate shopping experience in the gift shop.

Good luck with your quote.

Best,

Dan

Definitely use a dolly. Huge time saver. Biggest issue is reflections and hiding if you have to. So that could quickly justify a 2 day shoot.

Dan has some dolly's listed here under tripod. https://shop.wganforum.com/dl/74c4fe

Probably will need the battery pack to plug in the Ipad to stay alive while scanning as well. Lunch break is great for powering up the camera again.

I think you're rattling up the old Matterport compost pretty well here and shuffling the brain gas. It's all coming back to you now

Good luck

@Cabrahams

BTW, if you buy a Matterport Pro3 Camera, you likely could:

1. Add museum outdoor spaces (again, make the competition irrelevant)
2. Shoot much faster (less errors, scans not as close together as a Matterport Pro2 Camera

Dan

P.S. (Buy extra Pro3 batteries)

Dan,

Yeah I know, however...To do that I would have to sell my Matterport Pro AND Pro 2 to help defer the cost.

Is there a "marketplace" here to sell used cameras?

Do people here buy used cameras?

Would anyone buy a Matterport Pro at this point?

If I combined them for a small company starting out that could be helpful no?

@Cabrahams

Buy-Sell Used Matterport Pro Cameras (and Related Gear)

While there is a market for Matterport Pro2 Cameras - not everyone needs or can afford a Pro3 - it's likely less than you expect because others are selling a Pro2 to trade up to a Pro3.

You can check eBay for Pro2 cameras sold.

Dan

P.S. If you get an 80,100 SQ FT indoor museum, you will likely want:

1. Matterport Pro3 Camera (faster, fewer scan errors, option to shoot outdoors)
2. Fastest/most storage iPad (or you will run into challenges with so many scan points

Where do I go to view cameras to sell?

I clicked on the link you had sent to me but it takes me to the link below which asks me to pay for a membership which I just did, however, I still don't see an area on the site where everything is located?

A few things to keep in mind. When we’ve done museums understand what they are after and proud of. If there is a timeline wall or anything like that, and if they really want a virtual experience, it may be very dense. Walk thinking about how you experience it as a viewer. There will be some special exhibits that are draws they’ll want to expound on. Many times they’ll also have spaces they rent for gatherings and such. Determine if they have them and if they want them captured blank or staged. Bottom line is really understand how they want to use it. But for the most part VERY dense (if they want this a remote museum experience and not just a walk through.)

We would typically charge per sq ft, somewhere around $.18-$.25/sq ft. plus an additional monthly hosting, support, and maintenance fee of around $40/month.

You should definitely go ahead of time if possible to plan it out... if you're doing a day rate I would charge what you think your time and the tour is worth. for 80k sq ft and assuming that the tour would probably be visible by a LOT of people i'd charge a fair amount, maybe $5k per day.

@Cabrahams I definitely recommend like the others did consider going there to check out the exhibits for just one thing, in our area museums are using Wi-Fi hot spots to explain each exhibit. I have found in some larger spaces Wi-Fi becomes its own issue with Matterport. But would also consider upgrading your iPad. It made a world of difference just doing the scans and the time it saved me to re-align a scan or even delete one on large projects.

It looks like they want to utilize 3D Vista software. I guess I would need another camera. I've never used this software nor do I own a camera so I might just bow out unless someone here can explain better?

Thanks,

With 3Dvista, I would probably recommend a Theta X as budget-friendly capturing option - there is a great video here on WGAN with Dan and Ben Claremont comparing the currently available solutions. You’ll need to invest about 800 USD for the camera plus maybe a suitable tripod plus 500 USD for the 3DVista software.

You could partner with @Home3D to do all the backend work and you do the shoot and client relations.

@Cabrahams

I could imagine that a Matterport Service Provider that was asked to quote on the project is making other MSPs irrelevant by mashing up 3DVista + Matterport (something that can also be accomplished with Matterport + 3rd Party Service Providers overlay).

For clarification, you can still shoot the museum tour(s) with a Matterport Pro2 Camera (Pro3 recommended) and 3DVista is used for menus, branding and more.

For example, the 3DVista menu might list the various exhibitions and the links point to their respective Matterport tour (or a deep link to that space within one tour).
