Video: WGAN-TV Matterport Workshop 3.0 Part 5 of 5 Short Story #723- Scans Alignment Discussion

Hi All,

Should there be a "beep" or "fog horn" or "siren" or "red light" when a scan does not align with the previous scan?

A fun conversation among:

✓ Greater Chicago area-based 3D RoomScapes Photographer Ross Zanzucchi
✓ Matterport Content Marketing Manager Amir Frank
✓ myself

Seriously, what are your thoughts on an alert for scans that show up in an unexpected place?

Best,

Dan

P.S. This WGAN-TV Short Story #723 is from the WGAN-TV Week of Matterport Workshow 3.0 Training shows available in the WGAN-TV Training U (in Matterport).

This question has a fundamental problem.

Since Matterport’s alignment system searches among all previous scans to try to find the best alignment, only the operator can tell whether the new scan is in the right position or not. Yes, a scan may show up anywhere, and maybe be in a correct or really nuts place in the model, but there’s no way for the software to know. Only the human can.

Most of the time a new scan is point is very close to the last previous one. But sometimes you need to move the camera to the opposite side of a house to continue work, shooting the ‘west wing’ after completing the ‘east wing’. This next scan will be far away from the last one, but only the operator can know if it’s correct or not.

Okay, that said, IF the software COULD know that the scan was crazy way off, I’d like to hear a sarcastic comment from Rodney Dangerfield or Don Rickles.
